Album Notes It's fair to consider Download, a project comprising renegade members of Skinny Puppy and Moev, a reunion of the old Nettwerk crew. But you'd be shortsighted in thinking this was a bunch of old industrialists putting themselves out to pasture. Download began life as Cevin Key's post-Skinny Puppy side project, and the recordings prior to this one no doubt mined SP territory. But all that ends with III. Key, Anthony Valcic, and Philth (probably not his real name) unknowingly crafted one of the unsung electronica masterpieces of 1997. III is a magnificent distillation of Autechre-like beat madness, sub-industrialist murmuring, mutant musique concrete cum techno, and raging European experimentalism. From the Dali illustration adorning the wonderfully created digipak to the imagistic track titles ("Toooly Hooof", "Mzeo B", "Flight of Luminous Insects"), Key and his cohorts have managed that rare feat-a truly original, modern electronica record that bends genres, eclipses their formulaic trappings, and emerges as something staggeringly unique. There's the quasi-techno of "Moth," with its Krautrock melange of sounds, the stumbling digital abstractions of "Pleck," and the squeaky alien-cathedral ambience of "Were." We'd tell you more, but then, we'd have toawell, you know.
Editorial Reviews ...[cEvin] Key's approach has become more ambient, exploring light synth and pulsing rhythms in softly mutating tracks....As a whole, the album seems transitional, as if Key were adjusting his style and approach in the absence of [Dwayne] Goettel... Option (05/01/1998)
