The Doors (DVD 2003)

Dislike - fact that it was a copy!!!
Decided to buy when i typed the word The Doors and ebay site came up. I thought - okay, let's go down the ebay route - should have realised it was too good to be true at that price

Having grown up listening to The Doors, I was slightly worried about this film, but I needn't have been. What amazing acting from Val Kilmer. His uncanny resemblance to Jim Morrison obvioulsy helps, but even that does not explain how well he gets the character. And the live singing, which again is actually Val, is uncannily like Jim. Apparently it even confused some of the actual group when they heard it: they couldn't distinguish what was Jim and what was Val. Not a film to watch if you have no interest in the Doors or Jim Morrison, unless you enjoy biopics. It does illustrate what a strange life Jim led right up until his death. Unfortunately for Val, it meant some people (especially the press) couldn't tell the difference between the part he plays and the real Val. Perhaps he is still living that down.

Jim Morrison certainly did!
His self-destructive personality is portrayed so well by Val Kilmer that sometimes you forget its not Morrison himself on the screen. The fantastic soundtrack also adds to the hedonistic atmosphere in many scenes, giving a real taste of the times.

This was to be the story of the band known as The Doors. Following them from their early days playing the Whiskey a go-go to the unfortunate death of their lead singer Jim Morrison.
Being quite an avid fan of The Doors i was quite disappointed by this film. Val Kilmer puts in a top preformance as Jim Morrison but is let down by the storyline on a factual level. If this is your first introduction to The Doors then this film is quite entertaining. But if you want a more honest insight into The Doors you'll be better off to read No One Gets Out Of Here Alive by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugarman which was what the film was ment to be based on.

Great film i'm a big fan of the doors a bought this dvd because i wanted to know more about the band and Mr Morrison as i wasn't born when the band became famous.

This is a really good film - Oliver Stone at his best. It really gives a sense of Jim Morrison's hedonistic lifestyle and 60's America in general. The music is brilliant of course and the tripping scenes are well done. But to fully appreciate the film you have to try and stop leching at Val Kilmer as Jim!
