DOOM - THE ROCK, KARL URBAN, ROSAMUND PIKE
Review created: 25/09/06

THIS FILM DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN - BULLETS, GORE AND MONSTERS. TYPICAL 'SAVE THE CIVILIANS/SCIENTISTS/PLANET' FARE, NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS ALIENS OR PREDATOR BUT OUR GUNG HO MARINES DO HAVE A CERTAIN CHARM (AND MASSIVE GUNS) AND KARL URBAN CERTAINLY SHOWS THAT HE IS ONE TO WATCH FOR THE FUTURE. DEFINITELY NO OSCARS FOR THIS ONE BUT HOW CAN YOU BE DISAPPOINTED WHEN IT PRETENDS TO BE NOTHING MORE THAN A SHOOT 'EM UP ANYWAY. ACCEPTABLE LATE NIGHT VIEWING WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED.

Its not as bad as you may think!

Went to see this in the cinema with a couple of friends. Two of us have religiously seen all of The Rocks' films, not because we consider them to be great works of cinematic genius or because we rate him as an Oscar-grade actor, just because they never cease to make us giggle.
The other lad came along knowing what he was seeing, but didn't know The Rock was involved. If he knew, he'd never have come along, prejudging it to be naff straight away.
However, after 1/2 an hour of loose plot and muscle, we were all smirking away.
OK, trying to make a film out of a game is a surefire way of making a truly attrocious piece of celuloid, Streetfighter is the best example I can think of to portray this. Unless it's animated, of course, where little things such as reality and stunt recreation is not an issue (I point once again to Streetfighter, the animated movie, which I rubber-stamp as being class).
However, if you want some true alpha-male guns and muscle action and can shut your brain off, you cant go wrong with Doom. Buy it, buy booze, relax, have a laugh.

  Not great

When I first heard of this movie I had high hopes, I have been a fan of the games from the beginning, but this is another one of those movies which just tries to cash in on the name, while having little to do with it. Firstly, I didnt like the way that this had a squad of soldiers, while the game was all about the characters isolation with the monsters, with no one else around, and secondly, there was not nearly enough of these monsters, no more than a dozen in the whole film. But there were some good points, it was amusingly corny in parts, and quite dark in others, the special effects were good, and I think casting the Rock as Sarge was a good decision. But one final bad point, the tagline, noone survives, is false, 2 people survive, if it cant even get that right its not going to be that great.

I'd like to start off saying Doom rocks! Everything about it, from the amazing engineering techniques to the amazing graphics and ideas. The storyline is one that everyone can follow, and people are dying left and right, the perfect ingredients for a awesome movie.

I must admit that I was expecting a lot from this film. My boyfriend has played on the game and the film had the Rock init so I had high expectations for it.
I thought the basic story line of the monsters was good. But all the way through it I kept thinking that it could be better.
The make-up and affects were brilliant, the way those people were transformed into the monsters was a work of art.
I did love it when Reaper is in the first man mode. You see the monsters coming at him and you do shout at the screen for him to shoot them (which he does) without realising it.
If you like the Rock, a bit of blood and guts a long with the game then I'd say this film is for you. But other wise, be prepared for a bit of disappointment.

This is a heart-pounding movie from the word go! Within the first few minutes you realise what you're in for. The story is similar to Aliens (although obviously with a lower budget) and the pace of the film simply never lets you come up for breath. If you like sci-fi horror...then this is for you...buckle up and hold on!

Being an avid fan of the classic doom games and horror films a pleasantly suprised. The film more or less follows the path of the game, and has some really good in game recreations. Having a well known actor as dwight johnson, aka'THE ROCK', gave it an extra level of stability the film needed. A very good script and plot, gave this film a big thumbs from me.

  Doom (The Movie)

I bought this because I was a big fan of the games and also the Artbox Cards which came out after the film was released. My expectation was low, having read some damning of the film but I was pleasantly surprised. The film has all the brooding atmospherics you would expect and mercifully is not filmed in the pitch dark. (I hate black screen when you are supposed to imagine what is going on from the soundtrack).

It is a good adventure yarn with a couple of scary bits and some excellent visual and audio effects. The story doesn't follow any of the old plots exactly but it doesn't stray too far from the usual themes. The characters are well developed and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Go for it!

Based on the popular computer game starring 'The Rock' this film is cleverly put together with a good twist to gaurntee you grip your seat in anticipation.

One section of the film is put together in the same vain as the game with a first-person perspective, allowing the avid gameplayers to get what Doom was all about.

  Doom (DVD) Extended Version
Review created: 06/11/06

I have to say this is a very enjoyable film although after watching it I have now fallen out with The Rock.

As most people know this film is based on the computer game (I have actually played the original game) and it doesn't't let the game down in any way, shape or form.

The special effects are amazing and this film is very well directed. The first person shootout is absolutly brilliant to watch and again very well directed. It really is amazing to watch and very cleverly done.

The gore content is quite high so if you enjoy something that will make you feel a bit queasy then this film is for you!

  Doomed!
Review created: 01/08/06

Movie conversions of videogames are generally not very good. I think the best so far have been the Resident Evil films and purely for fun The House of the Dead. I had hoped that such a popular game as Doom would finally break the mould, but unfortunately it doesn't. The biggest let down is changing it to much from the game, obviously a film and a game vary greatly but the film should be able to use the best ideas from the game and develop them. This film is closest to Doom 3. Which I played and loved on the Xbox before I saw this. The best bits being the introduction of some storyline as to why you are blowing up hells creatures on Mars. The game has a great atmosphere and tension as you wonder what is coming around the next corner often plunged into pitch black with just a small torch to find your way around. The film ignores this and goes for blowing everything up straight away with no tension what so ever. The film takes place in all of about 5 locations which take less than a minute to run between. The game was like a huge maze which took ages to get through. The creatures included in the film, the Imps and Hell Knights look great.....but what about the zombies, lost souls and no Cacodemon!! The Rock does ok as do the other actors but I was expecting so much more. The film is an ok action film more in common with an Aliens wannabe and quite a missed opportunity for such a big game with a huge fan base. Maybe a Doom 2 will put it right?

  The Review of Doom

The reason I was attracted to the DVD of Doom was the price. I have seen Doom at the cinema. It is not the greatest film but is great for coming home after a long day and putting on a DVD. The storyline is straight forward so you are not left wondering what is going on. The best part of the film is where one scene you go into first person mode which copies the video game itself.

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.

  Doom (DVD)
Review created: 28/08/09(updated 28/08/09)

This movie is based on one of the best computer games of the 90's Doom, staring (The Rock) as a squad leader of the R.R.T.S.

He is sent with his team to Mars to stop the nightmarish creatures coming to Earth, also staring (Karl Urban) as Reaper.

This is a well made movie with lots of mild Horror and lots and lots of Gore and Action, with Suspense.

  A good, solid gorefest.
Review created: 21/08/09

Despite various unfavourable reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by the film. The plot proved to be more substantial than I'd expected, and the acting was of a surprisingly high quality.
The first-person shooter sequence alone is worth watching Doom for, it's an inspired and exciting piece of cinema.
While the anticipated slaughter of most of the characters in the film takes place, suspense is maintained by various narrow escapes, and moments when the viewer is convinced that something is about to happen, whereupon it eerily doesn't...
A major downside, which rather spoils otherwise good character acting is the indiscrimate use of the f-word.

On the whole, I recommend Doom as a film to watch... at least once!
