I came across this album by accident, the final track on the cd (Walk Between Raindrops) has been played a few times on Radio 2 by Sarah kennedy whilst driving home from work, I automatically assumed it was Steely Dan, I got on line one night & found out about this CD, I thought being as it had been released in '82 I'd find it hard to track a copy down. But I managed to find a few on ebay, put in a bid, won it, got it, went straight to the final track, put it in the car finally got to listen to the album in it's entirety. There ain't many albums out there that you can listen to without wanting to skip through the tracks, well there wasn't no track skipping here, the guy is a genius, as the album depicts on the front cover, a nightfly is a late night american DJ, and that is what I see every time I play this cd, late night driving music, or better still a nice glass of scotch, lights turned down & a fag in your hand chilling with Donald! This album will move you, it's jazz, soul, rock & blues all rolled into one. What more can anyone ask for? If you loved Steely Dan, your gonna love this CD. So what you waiting for? get on ebay & get yourself a copy!!!!!!!!!

  BEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED...

This album has won 'best album ever' on a regular basis. It was recorded over thirty years ago, but STILL has the 'FRESH AS PAINT' feel as the day it came out. Clever, cogent, intelligent and amusing lyrics - with tunes to match !!! in the words of the sage: IT JUST DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS !!

From
a gratefull music fan
Michelle

This has got to be one of the classic albums of all time and if you have never heard it I strongly recommend you do.

The sound is a smooth mix between jazz, blues and funk. There is a little bit of everything in there.

A timeless album that will never age and always be on your playlist for serious chill out sessions.
Well worth a Listen

  Second best album ever

This is the second best album ever recorded, in my opinion.

I am a big fan of Steely Dan and all of Mr Fagen's later work, but this is when everything was just perfect for DF. For a little blink in time some of himself was allowed to escape onto vinyl and Nightfly is the result. It's about teenage yearning and turmoil(as is my favourite album, Blue, by Joni Mitchell) and hopes for things to come. I love it so much I deliberately ration myself so I never tire of it. The best tracks on the album are the first eight. The last eight are pretty good too. As are the eight in the middle.

Where else can you hear the line 'There'll be Spandex jackets - one for everyone'?

Loved this CD and have enjoyed it ever since it first came out ... wonderful mixture of blues/jazz/rock fusion, unbeatable, what a great musician Mr Fagen is and his output gets better ....

Bought this copy as a thank you gift for the teacher who has seen my kids through all their major music exams a year earlier than usual; my daughter wrote a major part of her project about Donald Fagen and I am sure her teacher will appreciate this gift :-) well I hope so

Anyway, it is a wonderful album which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to all, if you have any happy memories of Steely Dan so much the better SMILES

Thank ypu for reading this

Really cool laid back music from "ex Steely Dan" front man. What i would call "lounge Jazz". Lost album over 20 years ago. Great to have it again

  Donald Fagen `The NIghtfly`

Donalds first solo album after Steel Dan, made in 1982 it was one of the first recordings to be made entirely in digital and is still used today as a reference in setting up monitor speakers in studios.

Much more laid back than any of Dans albums, perhaps more akin to Gaucho in sound scapes. Some great playing from the usual suspects, Carlton etc...

All Fagen penned apart form Ruby Baby, which is perhaps my fave of the album.

A great album if you like Steely Dan or Donald Fagen and if you like very well performed jazz.

  Catching up with old releases

I guess I was too young to get the Steely Dan thing first time round. This album was released when I was 12, at a time when I can't really remember listening to too much music and if I did it wouldn't be some slightly odd west coast AOR/jazz.

I come at Steely Dan/solo releases from my love of jazz. For me I see the cream of west coast session musicians - the Brecker brothers, Larry Carlton, Greg Phillinganes, Ernie Watts. All these cats help make this really work.

The two main tracks on this album are I.G.Y and the title track.

If there's one thing I've never really come to terms with it is Donald Fagen's lyrics and I.G.Y is no exception. International Geophysical Year, yeah OK. Its all about the horns and backing vocals on this one.

With The Nightfly its more specific - that bit where the backing singers go "an independent station" is just perfect.

I think that the only shame is that as a solo project you don't really see Donald spread his wings musically and show us something we don't see in the group set up. That said if you like Steely Dan then this is definitely going to be your cup of tea.

The Nightfly - A Hidden Gem
Review created: 20/07/08

No doubt about it, The Nightfly is the best album of the 1980's. Like the other reviewers of this masterpiece, it is almost impossible to put into words just how very good this album is. The Nightfly was released shortly after Steely Dan split. I bought it then and was amazed at the brilliant variety of the songs. Each number is hugely individual and different, yet with a "soft jazz" influenced undercurrent. If you didn't know any better, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a "best of Donald Fagen" album, rather than a stand alone album.

As another reviewer commented, there are no tracks on this album that you will want to skip. Very true. That didn't always apply to Steely Dan's output, as we know. This collection of songs is timeless and was clearly undertaken as a labour of love by Donald. It wasn't a huge hit at the time, probably because it got very little publicity. But The Nightfly should be in everyone's music collection. It is, without doubt, one of the best albums ever made and certainly the best album involving Donald Fagen. And I say that having heard all of Steely Dan's excellent albums.

I was in a music megastore a few years ago with a pal and I advised him to buy The Nightfly. I promised him a 'money back guarantee' if he didn't like it. Unsurprisingly he loved it. You'll find a few copies here on eBay. If you buy nothing else this week, I do urge you to buy The Nightfly. I promise it is absolutely brilliant. Like the rest of us, you will play it again, and again, and again.
