Dogville (DVD 2004)

Danish born style of filmaking which uses a theatre style set and props rather than the usual extravagance of cinema - Kidman is fantastic - as are most of the other players - her situation deteriorates in a way that keeps you glued to the screen. I find a lot of my friends were disapointed by this film, I would say that If your a big fan of American films about people getting punched and blown up, with people like Brad Pitt in then this might overstretch you.

I bought Dogville not really knowing what to expect, except that it would be a bit different from the norm. I thought the setting - the town is drawn on the floor and there are very minimal sets and props - was really clever and added to the isolation of the characters from the 'real world'.

Initially I thought I would find the lack of sets distracting but the film was very engrossing and the setting seemed less odd as things progressed.

The acting was good but in the end I felt let down by the story, particularly the ending. Maybe I'm just dim and don't get it and everyone else does. Thats why I give it 3/5 - I hate getting all the way to the end and still not knowing exactly what happened.

However, if you want to watch something that isn't run of the mill, that has some imagination and creativity, then this film has a lot going for it.

Personally i thought this movie was superb.

completely suprised by the setting but was a pleasent suprise as its something different and nothing i have ever seen in a movie.
a totally original setup never seen anything like it, it wasnt just another movie that will sink into the sea of the thousands of samey-type typical genres, this really stands out to me. the storyline was very entertaining revealing more as the movie went along. if you are like me and enjoy watching something different (with brilliant acting from Kidman i must say) then this is a must.
well worth watching 5/5 from me.
