This is a very smart and very funny movie. It's beautifully paced and played with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek, as you might expect from such a star-spangled cast. It has a religious theme, so beware if you're very easily offended.

I just laughed in shock and awe when watching this film, I thought it was one of the best takes on the 'God' story I have seen in a long while.
Lots of blood too.

The double act between whoever the main actors are worked well though I cant be bothered to go into remembering their names, Matt and Bob?

A review is either Too long, Too Short, a waist of space or *------------------ *insert own description here.
This review falls into the neither reigons of hell that spawned it end of the scale.

This movie is great and i think kevin smiths second best to jay and silent bob strike back. Again you have loads of famous stars like chris rock, eliza dushku and even kevins wife. The best characters are jay and silent bob played by jason mewes and kevin smith and this is a must have movie. But it is kind-of religious so quite hard to understand in parts.

Brilliant dvd about 2 fallen angels on earth
Review created: 16/10/08

I love the storyline and the feasability of it too.I could watch it over and over again because it is a comedy too. The actors are brilliant and also the special effects. The writer had great imagination to cast GOD the way he did. I believe that all denominations of society would enjoy this film

Dogma - The Penultimate Worthwhile Kevin Smith Film
Review created: 18/04/08
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Any self-respecting film fan should be well aware of the earlier works of Kevin Smith. From the brilliantly cynical opus of modern mediocrity that was Clerks Smith's early outings were synonymous with the Indie film genre.

Following the original success of clerks were the equally enjoyable Chasing Amy & Mallrats. Chasing Amy was a bit deeper (with Ben Afleck would you believe) whereas Mallrats was a bit more base but still a good watch. Following that there are only 2 other films, in my opinion of course, that are worth your time. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which is a classic stoner comedy and the film I'll talk a little bit about today which is Dogma. After those two he's created nothing worth speaking of. (Although the new Reaper series is watch-able but only because of Twin Peaks Legend Ray Wise).

Dogma in my opinion is the best thing to come from Kevin Smith. Instead of sticking to his comfort zone of 1990's popular culture based gags and dialogues that which make people remark, "Dude me and my friends are so like that", Dogma was an excellent move into a surreal cameo-frenzy, original take on the war between good and evil.

With the triumphant return of the unlikely protagonist support duo of Jay and Silent bob as well as the Damon/Afleck tag team putting in an excellent performance (no N J construction worker accents to be heard thank God.) the film has a quick and witty pace that enthrals you from start to finish. Somehow Smith keeps the film on a ridiculous keel with naked black angels and demons made of faeces and at the same time keeps the main drive of the story vital and interesting without becoming stupid to the point where you just don't care.

Without giving to much of the plot away the film focuses on an abortion clinic worker who is called upon by a representative of god to stop the plans of two fallen angels who are trying to find a loophole back into heaven. She encounters a bunch of unlikely friends and foes on the way and the film keeps you hooked until the finale which as expected was pretty damn random as well.

If you're looking for an awesome film to watch with your friends Dogma is up there. I'd definately recommend it to anyone under the age of 50 and you like Kevin Smith and have seen Daredevil but not this hang your head in shame.

  A Class film
Review created: 26/02/08
by:

This is a smart comedy about religion and the Church. We find a great cast of different stars playing God, angels, demons, muses, prophets and apostles. I can understand that for some people religion is a very serious issue and that these individuals may take offense in this movie. However, if you do no belong in this group, I highly recommend you to watch this film, since I am sure you will have a great time.
The Church is in a renewal process and seeking to attract people to enlarge its flock. Some of the changes involve revamping the depressing image in the crucifix for a smiling, winking and thumbs-up Christ. Also, a Church in New Jersey decreed a day in which everyone that passes through its gates will be cleansed of all sins and forgiven by God. Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) are two angles that have incurred in God's wrath and therefore were expelled from heaven and condemned to live in Wisconsin from the rest of their eternal lives. They see this as an opportunity to be forgiven and allowed to return to heaven.
The path to their destination is not an easy one though, since by achieving their forgiveness they would prove God wrong, and existence will cease because it is based on the fact that God is always right. Therefore, Loki's and Bartleby's journey affects a large number of people and other mystic figures. There are two sides to the conflict, those that want to prevent them from getting to their destination, and those that want to help them and create chaos. Among muses, demons, the thirteenth apostle and a Golgothan, which by the way is super gross, we find a woman named Bethany (Linda Fiorentino). She is at a tough stage in her life and has almost lost her faith, but is requested by Metathron, the voice of God, to stop the two angels in their quest. You could watch this film again and again. 5 stars!!

  Dogma DVD (2002)
Review created: 04/07/07(updated 22/07/07)

This is a great movie!
An off shoot to the Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back movies, Dogma follows the events of the Last Scion (the last mortal with Jesus' bloodline on earth) as she travels to New Jersey in an attempt to stop two fallen angels undo the very fabric of earth, space and time.
The last Scion (who has only just found out that this is indeed what she is) is aided by a host of comic 'helpers' including Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith as Jay and Silent Bob playing the 'prophets', Chris Rock as the 13th (and only black) disciple of Jesus, and an awesome performance by Alan Rickman as the Metatron (the voice of God) Salma Hayek as a muse with writers block and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as the fallen angels. The movie also contains more cameos than I could possibly mention in a short review.
Though not as fast gag hitting as some of the other Kevin Smith movies mentioned above, the laughs are still well and truly there and as side clutching as ever.
A clever if not analytic view of how, in the words of Salma Hayek’s character, "Catholics mourn their religion" rather than worship it, Dogma will have you laughing from start to its hilarious climax as God HERSELF makes and appearance to 'tidy up'!
Dogma is a must for all Kevin Smith and comedy fans alike.
As Dogma is currently deleted from print, it makes eBay the only place to grab yourself a copy, and I can whole heartedly advise you do.
Bykersev.

I watched this DVD quite a few years ago and thought it was absolutely fantastic. At the time it starred the up and coming Ben Afleck and Matt Damon who are now well known established actors! The movie is extremely funny and is really well acted by everyone. It always manages to make me laugh and has a fab cast including Salma Hayek and Chris Rock. This is definately worth a watch.

Dogma - I told you he was funny!
Review created: 05/12/06

This is one of Kevin Smith's later movies, and while it still has the silly humour/light relief of Jay & Silent Bob's 'clown shoes', it also has the witty dialogue of his earlier works such as Clerks or Chasing Amy. A lot has been made of the 'blasphemy' in the film, and while Kevin Smith tries to head this off with a note in the introductory credits, implying that the film is just a bit of fun, incensed Christians should note that the film assumes throughout that God DOES exist. If you feel that it implies anything less than omnipotence, think again...do you really think that none of what happened was planned? The only party with some grounds for complaint, in my view, is the Roman Catholic church. My only advice to them is 'remember, it's fiction, no-one is trying to say that the movie accurately reflects the church. Don't cry like a little girl with a skinned knee. Laugh with us. After all, even God has a sense of humour - just look at the platypus'.

I already had the film on video and watched it with my daughter who loved it. I recently went out to buy the DVD/Video for her but found that the local shops did not stock it and/or said it was deleted. I thereafter went onto E-bay where I purchased the DVD quickly and easily. EBAY is an excellent service and all and every purchase I have made has been made quickly and easily. It makes life so much easier.

If your the kind of person who 'thinks outside the box' so to speak you will love this film.
