Doc Martin. Series one and two

Possibly certain episodes were better than others, but there were none that could even be described as anything but good. Clunes playing a straight role here, is funnier than all the supposed 'comedy' series he has been in before.
There are all aspects of human life to be found here, some slightly exaggerated for effect no doubt, but none obtrusively so. Casting for the other characters in this programme was either very lucky or done with extreme thoughtfulness. Caroline Katz as head teacher, is superb as a potential partner for the 'Doc'. You sense that at sometime they'll get it together, but their clashes keep you guessing as to when!
Despite the fact that he has an aversion to the sight of blood, Ellingham proves his real worth when he has to cope with a life or death situation of one of the school children who has aruptured spleen, and operates in the ambulance en route to the hospital. It is interesting to note the reaction of young Peter who forms an affinity for the doctor, recognising him as a kindred spirit of whom no one is particularly fond.
All in all a refreshing change to find a TV comedy that is actually funny whilst maintaining a kind of sweet innocence about it. Well worth getting the DVDs if you didn't see it on TV the first time. I find it's one of those programmes that you can watch once in a while when you need cheering up, even if you've seen it before.
