Die Another Day , could be better !!

Die Another Day is a classic example of what happens when a movie script is created by committee rather than taking a single idea and developing it. The plot is so disjointed that it's easy to imagine different members of the production team coming up with different ideas and set pieces with the poor writers then having to try to somehow glue them all together - "I know, let's have a Cuba sequence!" In short, Die Another Day is a mess.
Which is a great pity, as the previous two Bond movies were first-rate and gave Pierce Brosnan an opportunity to really put his mark on the series. I still maintain that Brosnan, with the right combination of looks and talent, was the perfect Bond, but that he was often let down by those around him. The fact that Brosnan was ousted from the role following the Die Another Day debacle while the men responsible for the dire script - Neal Purvis and Robert Wade - have been handed writing duties for the forthcoming Casino Royale is an absolute disgrace.

Not only is the plot and dialogue dismal, but the acting isn't that great either. Brosnan does his best, but Toby Stephens (who is a very fine actor) is laughable as Gustav Graves - about as threatening as a Tory toff threatening to force the world to eat cucumber sandwiches and replace football with polo as the national sport. Halle Berry is also awful, although the supporting cast makes a better impression - Rosamund Pike is delectable as Mirando Frost, Rick Yune makes up for Stephens' drippiness as Graves' sinister sidekick, while Judi Dench and John Cleese are once again superb as M and Q (with Cleese getting the best line in the movie - "Ah yes, the legendary 007 wit. Or at least, half of it").

The movie also suffers from some truly awful CGI effects that have been rightful compared by other critics as being about as realistic as a PlayStation game. Even the chases and shoot-outs aren't terribly exciting.

I love the James Bond films and think Pierce Brosnan is a great Bond. I thought Die another Day was his best film so far despite Madonna's dodgy them. The special effects are amazing, some might say distracting but I thought they brought James Bond into the 21st century. This DVD also carries on from the World is not enough, were you see the vulnerability of Bond. I thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend to others for watching!

  Good, but not premium Bond

Die Another Day was surprisingly impressive first time round but doesn't hold up well to a second viewing for a number of reasons. The pre-title sequence is particularly strong, and the film is plot-led with a good premise that it explores far more effectively than License to Kill - Bond messes up, gets captured and finds his license to kill revoked and has to go it alone. But to many wrong choices are made in the casting of those both in front of and behind the cameras to do it full justice.
Brosnan is certainly a major problem here, getting lazier in the role far sooner than his predecessors. He takes too much for granted and doesn't seem to be putting much effort into it in the assumption that he's got it down pat, when in reality he's starting to go to seed - certainly he must be the only man to come out of 14 months of torture in a Korean prison chubbier than when he went in, something his tendency to spend much of the opening of the film with his shirt off and hidden under a bushy Monty Python castaway beard only exacerbates.

He's not helped much by his co-stars either: Halle Berry, who seems to become a worse actress with each successive film, really can't handle sass or wisecracks, which is a shame since that's almost all her part consists of, and their initial meeting exchange of innuendoes seems more like eavesdropping a married man picking up a hooker to prove he's still got it than anything else. Rosamund Pike's other fatale femme fares a little better purely on he grounds that, while an extremely one-dimensional performer, to least her limited abilities fit the part. Toby Stephens' villain is a bigger problem. While it's a neat touch that he models himself on an unflattering portrait of Bond's vanity, Stephens actually seems to be basing his performance on Rik Mayall's caricatured MP Alan from sitcom The New Statesman, and the results aren't pretty - a largely ineffectual screen actor, it's no accident that he needs to don an electronic suit of armour to become a credible foe for Bond in the final punch-up. Curiously, two of the better performances on display come from bit-players John Cleese (pleasingly restrained) and Michael Madsen as a distinctly unimpressed company man. Even Madonna's unnecessary cameo as a fencing instructor is considerably less painful than her terrible title-song, easily the series' worst. Still, the resulting overly enthusiastic swordfight is okay but would probably have been even better had they hired William Hobbs to choreograph it instead of Bob Anderson (Anderson may have coached Errol Flynn, but only in some of his worst films).

The direction adds to the problems. Lee Tamahouri is a maddeningly variable director, and too often its his weaknesses on display here. For a series that prides itself on globe-trotting, he has a very poor sense of place (aside from the Iceland scenes, this is the first Bond film that really looks like they were afraid to leave the studio backlot) and his handling of action isn't always effective - indeed, the car chase actually looks like several shots are missing. Still, at least they manage to just about get away with the science behind the invisible car more effectively than the awful CGI that undermines the series' reputation for doing daring stunts for real: along with the occasionally slo-mo or sped up scene intros, it just seems horribly out of place without ever quite ruining the film.

Pierce Brosnan makes escapism very enjoyable. My dislike of Bond is the opinion that some others in my family try to shove down my throat! I love the action which Bond movies are famous for, but it is a shame about the violence which also abounds. The gagdetry is superb, and the stoyline is almost believable (a facet of recent Bond movies that adds to the appeal). The acting standard is extremely high. The action scenes are magnificent. Highly recommended!

DVD James Bond - Die Another Day
Review created: 05/08/06
by:

The description on the reverse side of the DVD box reads, "Pierce Brosnan plunges into action as James Bond in this adrenaline pumping thrill ride..."

Is this really the case?

Well, quite simply... yes. Brosnan brightly stars in his fourth outing as the legendary James Bond before handing over the reigns to the blond, Daniel Craig for the next installment, Casino Royale. He ends his successful run magnificently as we have come to expect, with all guns and gadgets blazing!

I found the movie to be very enjoyable. There are some clever moments that link back to previous classic Bond films. Most notably Halle Berry's slow-motion emergence from the tropical sea akin to Ursula Andress's memorable bikini scene from the first ever movie, Dr No, made back in 1962. Also Bond's Jetpack from the movie ThunderBall makes a brief appearance, much to the annoyance of John Cleese's Q. "Does that old thing still work?" Bond quips.

Madonna performs the theme track, who, as well as having a small cameo part in the movie, also contributed to the Soundtrack of another different spy movie, Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me. That must be a unique first.

This time round, the suave 007 is up against an evil North Korean leader, a traitor within British Intelligence, a deadly megalomaniac in the form of the sophisticated Gustav Graves and an even deadlier Super-Weapon that can harness the immense power of the Sun to create a powerful destructive light beam.

Action-packed doesn't really cover it. Although my personal preference would be for Brosnan's first Bond adventure, Goldeneye, I would still wholeheartedly recommend this installment for all Bond fans as it doesn't disappoint with amazing action sequences and wonderful locations.

I thought that Die Another Day was a good film another great film to add to the awsome series of James Bond. I would recommend this film to anyone who has previously watched the James Bond films and anyone that likes high action films. I would aim this film to ages 12+ because it has some scenes of violence and sex/nudity.

  James Bond with Pierce Brosnan
Review created: 25/10/09

Another film from the Bond sdtable, pure fantastical nonsense but this makes it all the more interesting, I think Pierce came to the Bond role a little too late (he should have been snapped up after 'Remington Steel'!. Bought for my mum's Bond dvd collection only.

By no means the worst Bond film ever, but the cliches are getting a bit long in the tooth by this point and you can see why they made the changes they did with Casino Royale.

Die another day - Bond 007

excellent escapism, literally! James Bond on his 20th escapade does it in style, with plenty of references to the previous 19 films, so keep your eyes open - and not just for the girls!
The second Disc is the usual "how it was filmed" and simple exposure of gadgets and gimmicks for the bond followers.
But an end of an era, Mr Brosnan's final showing as the man. I have enjoyed his style.

Another classic great watch bond film!
Review created: 10/03/08(updated 13/03/08)

Yet again another bond film which keeps you gripped from start to finish!

James Bond's newest mission begins with a spectacular high-speed hovercraft chase through a minefield in the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea -- and the action doesn't let up until the credits roll. From Hong Kong to Cuba to London, Bond circles the world in his quest to unmask a traitor and prevent a war of catastrophic proportions. On his way he crosses paths with Jinx (Oscar ®-winner Halle Berry) and Miranda Frost (Rosamund Pike), who will play vital roles in his latest adventure. Hot on the trail of deadly megalomaniac Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens) and his ruthless right-hand man Zao (Rick Yune), Bond travels to Iceland into the villain's lair: a palace built entirely of ice. There he experiences firsthand the power of a new hi-tech weapon. Ultimately it all leads to an explosive confrontation -- and an unforgettable conclusion -- back in Korea where it all started.   Die Another Day - James Bond 20
Review created: 06/03/08
by:

There have been three James Bond films with laser satellites, two of them in Pierce Brosnan's time. Were they running out of JB ideas? You bet.

The film is totally ruined by JB surf boarding, (yeah right he's 50!)
and rediculous special effects (see invisible car & surfing with a laser shooting the ice) and a story line with a reused bad plot.
still it's JB, you know what you get, action thriller - job done.

So the JB franchise realised this with DAD, so they got rid of Pierce and brought in a blondy, great casting, great script, great real life action, just what we want in a JB film.

Going off in a tangent, but still with a similar issue, why do these film companies release a sequel that is dire? Die Hard 4.0 (why don't they just kill his daughter? Hollywood wouldn't like it) Indiana Jones 4 (special effects of a 60+ year old throwing his whip around like an athlete) JB 21 (ran out of ideas? Go back to the first film Casino Royal and reuse it!)
