Album Notes
DIAMOND DOGS is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, saxophone, Moog synthesizer, Mellotron); Alan Parker (guitar); Tony Visconti (strings); Mike Garson (piano); Herbie Flowers (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded at Olympic and Island Studios, London; Studio L Ludolf Machineweg 8-12, Hilversum, Holland.Digitally remastered by Peter Mew & Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios). After George Orwell's widow refused Bowie the right to use 1984 as the title of his forthcoming album, he instead used the novel as a blueprint for what became DIAMOND DOGS. Accompanied only by keyboardist Mike Garson, bassist Herbie Flowers and drummers Aynsley Dunbar and Tony Newman, Bowie played guitar, sax, Moog and Mellotron as well as singing, composing, arranging and producing the whole thing. Bowie used a broad sonic palette to interpret Orwell's nihilistic view of the future. With its lush strings and dominant wah-wah guitar, "1984" could have easily been written by Isaac Hayes. Bowie's snarling sax on the title track and his simplistic-yet-effective guitar playing on "Rebel Rebel" turned both songs into instant glam classics. Amidst the imagery of a grey and totalitarian future, Bowie injected some optimism by including the nostalgic "Rock 'N' Roll With Me." Following the high-brow conceptualism of DIAMOND DOGS, Bowie's next transformation would be into blue-eyed soul singer on YOUNG AMERICANS.
