this has got wit, charm, drama and sarcasm to the very core! i purchased this because i didn't see it on TV and everybody raved about it. i thought i'd give it a go and was instantly hooked. My favourite character is Bree Van De Camp, she is hilarious with her old fashioned methods of living and even though she tries to live the perfect life, it never will be. you will not be disappointed with this!

  Surpasses the hype

A smash hit, if a risky step by ABC to produce the programme, 'Desperate Housewives' takes all the stereotypes (or should that be male fantasies and nightmares) of picket-fenced US suburbia - the man-eater, the dizzy single parent, the career woman making a job of bringing up her kids, the unfaithful trophy, and the Stepford wife with attitude. Oh yes, and then there's the dead narrator? This is a harder spin on 'American Beauty', an ironic, not to mention cynical glimpse behind the Martha Stewart façades of post-yuppie domesticity. It's funny, it's dark, it's electrifying.

Each episode provides a stand-alone drama, beating out a theme, pulsing to the rhythm of some moral … stated at the outset, restated at the conclusion, but with a sharp twist of irony. This is not the neighbourliness of Capra, George Bailey, and "Wonderful Life". There are good neighbours. And there are bad. It's a competitive world living in the suburbs - whatever else happens, you have to maintain the façade, you have to appear to be perfect, or at least have a credible explanation if you're not.

This is a wonderful series. It carries along the mystery of its narrator's death. Others will die. Murder can be brutal. It can also be quite functional. It can have charm. And one by one each perfect household comes unpicked, exposes a flaw like a run in a pair of stockings - once you've noticed it, you can't take your eyes of it. And while you're distracted with one plot strand, writer Marc Cherry works his sleight of hand and conjures up another twist.

The cast is wonderful. With perhaps only Teri Hatcher as a 'star' name, albeit she'd dropped out of sight for a few years, Cherry assembled an ensemble cast who generate some great chemistry onscreen and who amplify one another's talents and energies. There's scarcely a weak performance in sight. Direction and editing are excellent - the juxtaposition of scenes and shots, the ironic counterpoint of humour and mystery, the rapid cutting from one household to the next, and the overall quality of the production keeps your attention rapt.

But the script's the thing. It is beautifully crafted. The DVD extras accompanying season one give you some excellent insights into the writing process. You get a look at the making of the series, you get brief interviews with actors. You get some very interesting commentaries. And much more. It's a fascinating series. The DVD's, like the writing and the concept, are beautifully packaged. Excellent value, a series you can watch again and again. And again.

I decided to purchase this amazing series after watching the 2nd one on television. The quality of the DVD is of a high standard and the content is even better. I think this is clever and witty series that should be viewed by everyone, If you like programmes such as Sex and the City you will love this! If you don’t give a go anyway. Desperate Housewives has many twists and turns and is cleverly written. The special features on the DVD are of behind the scenes and interviews with all the main characters. The main reasons why I like this series is that it is narrated by a friend of the main characters which gives it something different than your average dramas. In addition, you can sit back and enjoy the funny, witty and sometimes sad stories of all those that live on Wisteria Lane. Each character has his/her own style which adds variety to the show. All in all I feel that Desperate Housewives is an excellent purchase.

I missed watching the series on TV. I had seen some publicity material for Desperate Housewives, and I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. I have only watched 8 episodes as yet, but I have found DH's to be both entertaining and funny.

I was equally pleased with the service I received from the seller, and the price represented good value for money. All in all a very worthwhile purchase.

The series kicks off with Mary Alice Young commiting suicide. The series centers her looking down on her friends, family and neighbours. Looking down on them all, she soon realises that her friends aren't as happy as she thought they were. Susan, a divorced single woman is desperate to be loved and trys to find love throughout the series. Bree, the "perfect one". Her husband wants a divorce and her kids hate her. Lynettte, a woman that has to put up with her loud hyper kids as her husband sets out to work each day. Gabrielle, a woman who wants her husband for his money and her gardner for the bedroom activities. Finally Edie, who doesn't really have a big part but the idea of her character is she's a slut that has been married quite a few times.
The Dvd itself is great with some good special features (my advice though is that you watch them after as they have some spoilers that could wreck it for ya if you don't know what's going to happen).
I give this a five as it's brilliant and so much better than the overrated Lost.

Desperate Housewives - Series 1 DVD

I'm a big fan of Desperate Housewives and just love all the dramas that are packed in each episode. You never really know what's going to come next and I suppose that's the reason so many viewers are hooked. You're guaranteed a great fun night in with this dvd boxset as it's filled with entertainment.

From the First episode - where you see Lynette climb into a swimming pool whilst fully clothed, to remove her hyperactive three boys (who assume its completely ok to play around in a dead woman's pool at her wake with everyone witnessing)- to the last episode of this series where you see Bree falling for the charms of a psychopathic pharmacist who becomes obsessed with her and plots to kill her husband.

I believe this is one of the best shows on British TV not only for us ladies but for the males also. My father's absolutely hooked and doesn't miss an episode. My partner claims he's not really that into it but yet he aks me for a catch up if ever he's not seen an episode with me!

All I can say is it's money well spent and I would advise anyone to purchase a Dsperate Housewives DVD Boxset. You can watch each episode in your own time, pause, rewind and fast forward your favourite scenes and you also have extended scenes and never before seen footage that sky customers haven't and never will have a chance to see.

I wanted to see Desperate Housewives after catching one episode of series II on telly one evening and finding it all very intriguing. I picked up the Series I box set in the shops several times and put it back because I thought it was too much money for something I wanted to watch on a whim. I finally got it on ebay for £10 and watched all the episodes over one week and several bottles of wine :)

I loved it, it was great! I loved all the characters and the dark sub-plots beneath the shiny facade of middle class American suburbia. Looking forward to bagging Series II on ebay sometime soon!

in the beggining i enjoyed this series however the secret plot just was confusing, each week you find more and more about why mary alice killed herself and then after 4 episodes you really dont care and rather you had a chance of shooting her yourself.
however everything bar mary alices secret was enjoyable. all the housewives have good stories and some very funny moments which bring this series up a notch or two, however i still dont agree its as good as eveyone says it is. i really feel that the reason for mary alices death couldve been a lot more interesting, but i just found it dissapointing due to the amount of suspense given.

Probably the best TV series ever!
Review created: 14/10/05

Where do I start? This series has been incredibly popular ever since it hits the screens - and for a good reason. It's brilliant!

It is dramatic & addictive
From the word go, you're let into a world where things are not what they seem - in every household on Wisteria Lane. The plot then thickens and bounces from theatrical moment to theatrical moment, without ever losing the audience (an achievement given the number of characters and sub-plots involved). One thing is sure: you'll definitely want to watch the whole series in one go.

It is funny
Amazing how the script writers have managed to include so many comedy moments in what is essentially a drama. More often then once, my wife and I found ourselves in fits of hysterics.

It feels so close to reality it's scary
You know when there's a character in a series and you go - that's just like so-and-so! Well, in Desperate Housewives, that's pretty much the case with everyone in the story. Bree is strangely reminiscent of my wife's mum; Lynette and Tom bear strange similarities with our own household, it is fair to say; and a close friend of ours must surely be Gabrielle's cousin. OK, the plumbers in our neighbourhood don't measure up to Mike Delfino, but hey.

And the actors...
What a line-up! The guys have probably already gone 'phoaaaw' at the billboards around the original TV launch, and there is no need to elaborate here. I also hear from informed sources that the guys are not bad either - with Mike a favourite with the ladies. And the acting's not bad either.

In summary - a real treat. If you've watched the series, you'll want to get this DVD just to enjoy it again. If you haven't, here is your chance, run for it!

  Series 1 Desperate Housewives
Review created: 13/03/09

Totally addicted to the new series 5 of Desperate Housewives and realised that I had missed a lot of the previous series. So thought I would buy them on eBay!!
Now watching series 1 and I thought it would be dated (like the first series of Friends) but its not.
Starts with the death/suicide of Mary Alice, who then becomes the narrator through the series of DH. Introduces all the character, Susan, Bree, Lynette, Gabriella and Edie plus their husbands, love interests (Mike the plumber, John the gardener) and their ups-and-downs in their personal lives.
Running through the 1st series is the mystery surrounding Mary Alice's death which does conclude at the end.
Great to have on in the background whilst doing other things!
Wish I lived on Wisteria Lane!!!

I'd missed so many episodes in the first series, I wanted to backtrack and start from the beginning again. Got series two now, and I've been watching it every night, although I don't usually have time for TV. Never mind Sex in the City, there should be a film made of Desperate Housewives.

I missed the first series of Desperate Housewives ..although always fancied Teri Hatcher from her superman days. DH series one sets the scene on an american community filled with many diverse people all with their own hidden agendas ...the scheming, jealously and downright tricks to catch each other out is both fascinating and highly enjoyable. Some very attractive women are a real bonus.

Why would perfect wife and mother Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) suddenly decide to commit suicide? That's the mystery at the heart of ABC's darkly funny Stepford-esque soap opera. While Mary Alice's friends Susan (Teri Hatcher), Lynette (Felicity Huffman), Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) and Bree (Marcia Cross) try to find out what happened, their own lives and loves get increasingly complicated. Nicolette Sheridan and Jamie Denton co-star.
