This is a welcome comeback from Depeche Mode with some of their best songs in a decade. It is a far departure from their earlier albums but this time they managed to make a good turn and rely on what they know best. Dave Gahan is back here from his private hell and sounds better than ever. The usage of gutiars and other 'enchancments' is absolutely reliable here while it was not on their earlier albums. The fusion is perfect.

About the songs: there are no fillers, highlights are the singles released (Barrel Of a Gun, It's No Good, Home, Useless), but my favorite song is Sister Of Night. It reminds me of Waiting For The Night from Violator. There are some instrumental tracks as well (this is a Depeche Mode album after all). My other favorite song is Home, I can't tell you how many times I listened to that song on cold, lonely winter nights and it always gave me a warm touch.

So if you were disappointed by DM's 90's tries, you should listen to this album, this time the guys managed to bring back the sound that is the trademark of the band. Great album.

I bought this CD back in 1997 when it was released and loved it straight away. Unfortunately it got scratched and I never found another at a 'good price' until now. And I still love it. Martin Gore has the most amazing talent in being able to write the most amazing lyrics, and coupled with Dave Gahan's vocals it is on parr with Lennon and McCartney and Morrissey and Marr. Dave has always had a great baritone vocal and feel this has been expressed more in their last amazing offering PLAYING THE ANGEL. Depeche Mode have always been my favourite band (they are my local band) and with such brilliant albums as this they will continue to be so. Long reign DM.

This album doesn't find them at their peak which I would suggest is probably on 'Violator' but it has its moments, the song 'Home' is one of their best songs on any album in my opinion. If you haven't already, I suggest you go out and buy 'Sounds of the Universe' as it's a massive return to form and their best album in over a decade.

This album is probably there best work to date, and old fans or new listeners should give it a go. The rawness of Daves' voice and the eerieness of Martin' guitar complement each other making an album full of songs that have character. There are no limits to the use of the keyboard as is their trademark and even though this is the first album without Alan the band have not lost their intrigue with deep lyrics and awry melodys.
