Excellent mid-range upscaling DVD player 5 of 5 people found this review helpful.
Having been through a few lower-end but still reasonable DVD players (Toshiba and Pioneer, upgrading from RGB Scart to Component), I felt my LG LCD TV finally deserved a half decent HDMI video signal. The sound of my system is extremely critical (I've got an ARCAM surround amp and KEF 5.1 speakers and they are amazing) and I was getting more annoyed with the physical noise of the transport spinning the DVD. I borrowed an upscaling Samsung DVD from a friend and, although the transport was silent and the picture was good, the sound was flat and uninspiring. Having then spent loads of time trawling the online website reviews, I came across the DVD-1920 and every one was incredibly positive, as were the user reviews. Having lived with the player for a few weeks, I can report nothing but good things. Excellent picture via HDMI or Component; dynamic, punchy sound; solid build, good menus, excellent setup options and a near silent transport! Denon DVD players have often been a cut above the average and the DVD-1920 rises head and shoulders (especially in the sound department) above many far more expensive units, especially as you can pick one up used for way less than £100.

Hi, this dvd player looks aesthetically nice and is pleasing on the eye. It has a brushed stainless steel look and plays all kinds of format of media, ie, cd, dvd, picture cd and cd recordable just to mention a few. The connections on the back consist of Scart, RGB component out, HDMI, coaxial and S video. It has an optical out and 5.1 surround output to a suitable surround amplifier. I`ve hooked up this player with my Sanyo plv Z2 projector, its a HD ready projector 1320 x 720 dpi and I was hoping that the upscaling to HD quality would look good on the big screen. Sadly I was dissapointed with the outcome, the sound through the optical link was great. The picture through the HDMI was awful, afer trying all the settings the picture was bit blurry and the colours weren`t that great either, I tried component out and got a bit better result. I haven`t tried it out on a HD tv so I can`t comment on the quality on a tv. I have other high end Denon dvd players including one bought on ebay, this was a DVD 1500, an older machine of around 6 years old with component out, the quality of the sound and the picture were stunning on the same projector. The colours were fantastic, crisp and very detailed. So please buy carefully and check out other reviews before you buy. Don`t be fooled by the fact that some DVD players offer upscaling to HD quality, I`d stick to the RGB component out to any projector and wait until HD or Blu Ray finally thrash it out. Denon make many excellent products but quality does come with a price. Thanks for reading and I hope this review proves helpful.
