  Dell XPS M1330

The XPS M1330 is the second Dell laptop I’ve owned. The Inspiron 9400 put me off buying another Dell - for the wrong reasons really. I didn’t want another high end laptop with poor battery life, and at just over £1000, the XPS M1330 seemed like a good choice. At 13.3″ it’s portable and packed with features.

The first thing I noticed about the M1330 was how thin it is. It’s about 1.5cm thick at the back, and tapers down towards the front. The keyboard’s a standard laptop keyboard and there’s plenty of room to rest your palms while you type.

The display is clear and vibrant. I opted for the better screen which meant I only got a 0.3MP webcam, but a screen’s used a lot more than a webcam - so it was worth it. It’s much use at brightness levels lower than 6/8, but the resolution is good for it’s size. There’s an inbuilt GeForce Go 8400, which is more than enough for light gaming, but don’t expect to run FEAR at maximum detail.

Battery life is very good. With the screen brightness to 3/4 and WiFi on, doing web browsing and word processing the battery lasted for 5 hours 24 minutes, which could be extended by reducing the screen brightness.

The keyboard and touchpad are as expected, there’s plenty of room to rest your palms while you type. The media buttons are a very nice feature. Whereas on the Inspiron 9400 they were physical buttons infront of the touchpad, on the M1330 they’ve been moved to the top edge between the speakers and the power button. The physical buttons have been replaced by touch sensitive keys which glow when you press them.

Connectivity on the M1330 is impresive. There are two USB ports - enough for an external mouse and hard drive, aswell as Firewire, VGA and HDMI out. Dell also included a multi-format card reader. 10/100Mbps ethernet is included, but surprisingly Dell left out a modem (does anyone even use 56k anymore?). The M1330 comes with an Intel AGN Mini PCI card, Bluetooth 2.0 and an infra-red receiver for use the the remote control, which slots into the ExpressCard slot. The remote control sounded like a gimmick at first but it’s actually pretty useful. If you’re watching a video and lying down, you can can navigate around and control the volume.

I was stung by Dell’s MediaDirect feature on the 9400. It was dark, I pushed the MediaDirect button instead of the power button. Instead of giving the user any kind of confirmation or checking whether you’ve juggled your partitions from the factory default, MediaDirect just de-allocates the drive letters from all partitions except C:\, then creates a second partition at the end of your drive and installs a stripped down version of XP which Dell calls MediaDirect. I had to spend an hour recovering my partitions. My advice is to delete all partitions on the hard drive, then re-create them as you want. That way, there’s no danger of starting MediaDirect by accident. It doesn’t do anything Windows Media Centre can’t do anyway, it’s just a Dell branded version.

The webcam is better than I expected. For the occasional conference on Skype or MSN 0.3MP is an ample resolution. There’s an LED which glows blue when the webcam is in use, so there’s no danger of anyone watching you pick your nose without your knowledge.

3rd Dell - They just get better and better

My pentium P4 laptop ran out of puff for picture and video editing, so needed a new one... Always been more than happy with DELL pcs, and XPS M1330 had the best overall specification, although expensive when compared to latitude... Key deciding factors for me was the M1330 screen, backlit LCD, small overall size and overall sexiness of the machine.

Specification ordered - 2.0ghz duo core, 4 gb memory, 128 mb graphics card, 160 gb HD (7400 rpm), 9 cell battery and in black.

The machine itself looks more sexy in the flesh than it does in the photos. 9 cell battery gives it a slightly bulbous rear and obviously adds to the weight.. The overall quality and feel is very good, dell have not scrimpted on the materials used, key board has a very nice touch, but not upto ibm/lenovo x series yet.. Screen is a relevation.. the quality of photos is excellent and I briefly ran a dvd on it and the picture was better than my top of the range sony tv... I would love to see this machine running a blue ray hi def movie!!

Preformance is what you would expect from the specification... the 7400 HD makes quite a difference to the overall speed and the duo core processor is good at running multiple tasks...

Disappointments: the speakers produce a very tinny sound, and an XP version of the M1330 is not available..

Summary: Rating says it all - an excellent machine, I'm please I paid the extra for the XPS over the latitude... its worth it

Before buying Dell XPS M1330 think twice!?

Dell XPS M1330 is one of stunning business model from Dell. At first glance, you will attracted by its stylish sleek design, and if you wanna stand out from the crowd then you need to consider one with red backlid for a few extra quids.

However, if you are buying this laptop with Windows Vista from the very first night you will start experiencing few terrible problems with this laptop. As soon as you will finish initial vista update you will discover that you laptop's cooling fan is spinning at highetest speed without any stop.
Its a very common design fault in this laptop[1]. There was a serious design fault of this laptop's graphics card, which overheat the graphics card very quickly and eventually destroy the card. To overcome this problem dell manage to write a patch which does necessary change to bios to run cooling fan without stop at highest speed. Its a dilemma situation, because soon you will discover your cooling fan is not working and its quite noisy too.

In my case, I did roll-back vista update to stop the cooling fan, on the other hand i am risking my graphics card life. However, as I have warranty i am not worried about it.
So my advice will be, if you are going to buy this laptop make sure you are ready hear noisy cooling fan sound all the time or you wanna go without vista update, where you will risk your graphics card life (got warranty?).
Thanks.

Great little laptop but get a warranty
Review created: 07/07/09
by:

Cracking little laptop, the first I've come across which really flies with Windows Vista. I purchased one with an Intel chipset as I've had 2 bad experiences with nvidia graphics chips overheating and killing the laptop, requiring a motherboard replacement.

BUT

my screen died. As the seller had a 28 day RTB, it is currently back with him being repaired. As with any laptop, when things go wrong it is expensive to fix as compared to a desktop machine. Always try and get some kind of extended warranty.

  DELL M1330 XPS Laptop
Review created: 29/06/09
by:

This is an excellent laptop!

We use them for business purposes and fly all over the world with them using them for power point training as they are quite resilent with their magnesium outer shell. They have a remote for when you are playing DVD's. We have 3 of them and will be buying another 1 or 2, due to their reliability.

One of the ones that we have just purchased from eBay has a beta of Windows 7 and there is a definate 'zip' in the way it functions, and will be the OS that we will upgrade too when it arrives in October.

Hope this helps!

How can they afford it?:

Each time an offer is completed, the company is paid a commission by an advertiser(eg lovefilm), which is then used, when you get more people to sign up, to pay for your chosen reward. Companies have found online advertising to be more effective, and cheaper, than television advertising. this is why getting friends to do free trails gives you rewards: there is a chance that they enjoy the offer and stay with the advertiser!
