A quality laptop. No gimmicks, just useful features. Review created: 03/03/08(updated 02/04/08) 11 of 11 people found this review helpful.
The first thing that struck me about the D610 is the level of build quality and materials used. With a combination of magnesium and aluminium used throughout the design it not only has a quality feel about it, but it's durable and lightweight. In terms of feature, the design is very flexible, having almost every feature you could wish for and the added flexibility of the Dell 'D-bay' media bay allowing a host of accessories to be fitted to the laptop ranging from DVD-RW drives, additional hard drives or even secondary batteries - there's a solution for most needs. The base spec of a standard D610 is more than enough to tackle day to day tasks with ease. It's a laptop that will satisfy all but the most power hungry gamers. With it being one of the most popular choices as a businesse laptop there are lots of reasonably priced accessories available in the market place, both used and brand new. And should it go wrong (this can happen to any laptop, especially with human intervention: dropping; coffe spills etc) the parts are cheap, freely available and can be replaced by anybody with a screwdriver and a copy of the service manual (which is full of pictures and a free downloaded from the Dell webiste). I recently replaced the motherboard on a 'dropped' machine in less than 20 minutes, and I'm no computer expert. Being Dell there is always good support from the Dell website, and should you need it the Dell help desk is just a phone call away. It's difficult to fault this laptop as it does the job it was designed to do very well. I have just one niggling annoyance which is that there is no internal microphone but, I can forgive it this since it does everything else so well.

I already use a work's Dell Notebook (Latitude D410) and my wife owns a Dell Inspiron, so I know that Dell's products are good quality and reliable. My 13 year daughter was in need of her own laptop so I purchased the secondhand D610 for Christmas. The laptop is a good size not too heavy and the screen size is reasonable (bigger than the D410). With and inbuilt Centrino wireless adapter internet access is simple to set up. It also has an inbuilt CD/DVD drive (which my D410 does not) Overall a sound product, and the price I secured it at £165 reasonable (I think) given that I believe the new cost for the Dell D610 was priced at over £1,000. One piece of advice I would give anyone buying on e-bay is to find out if it still has any warrenty or after sales service/breakdown agreement. To take advantage of this, you then need to know who the true registered owner of the laptop is before buying it in order to transfer the warranty. I rang Dell for some setup advice before given the laptop to my daughter, and discovered that there was still a year's warrenty still valid. "Great!" I thought. However, they would not assist me with any faults it may have because I was not the registered owner! They would however be willing to transfer the ownership details (& warranty) to me if I could supply the previous registered owners name. Unfortunately the seller of the laptop could not supply me this, and consequently I cannot take advantage of the warranty. I was not too disappointed as the seller never said there was any cover when it was listed. I was then however a little concerned about where the laptop had come from! Was it legitimate? I understood from the Dell telephone technical helpline that the laptop had been owned by a company. However, my daughter is happy with her present (but spends too much time on line,on MSN, and Bebo!)and no longer uses my wifes laptop. Finally. I would recommend a Dell over some on the less known makes as I believe they have a good reputation for quality good value priced products. This means that any second hand Dell laptops if looked after well, are still likely to function reliably.
