Very nice netbook, if you're looking for a netbook this isn't a bad choice. It's very small, if you draw round it it fits easily onto a piece of A4 paper. It also weighs just over a kiogram, so is perfect for transporting places with ease. Battery life is probably around 3 hours on average, depends what you use it for. It is near silent, except for the low hum of the monitor (which is 8.9" with a standard resolution of 1024x600). The keyboard is too small, which is annoying until you get used to it, but if you're on the market for a laptop this small it can't be helped. The tracker pad is good. The shiny black finish gets fingerprints on it easily, you'll find yourself rubbing it every few minutes with a cloth if you're that way inclined.

Dell has given you the choice of 2 operating systems, xp and ubuntu (linux). If you buy the one with xp, expect it to cost a little more as xp isn't free. People seem scared to go on linux as they think it is more difficult to use, but honestly that is not the case with this type of linux. Out of the box it just worked. Unless you need a program that is only on windows, and can't use a substitute, I can't see why you'd pay more for xp. Within minutes of starting the laptop I was online etc, with no real prior experience of linux, with enough programs ready installed to keep most people happy.

Overall this is a good little laptop and I recommend it.

Netbooks are what they are, tiny portable PC clones of one another with virtually identical specs and features. There is almost nothing to choese between them but the small differences do make a big difference. This is my third different machine now and by far the best of the bunch. The Toshiba NB100 definately has the best software if you want to go with Linux, and with netbooks you really should. The Tosh has Ubuntu remix which they've respectably left alone and not tinkered with. The Dell comes in a close second with a full Ubuntu install with a custom Dell interface which luckily can be switched off.
The machine itself is top notch, it only comes with a small SSD but it's very easily upgradable. The keyboard is small but usable and if it were any bigger the machine would not be much use to me as it would be too large to shove down my jacket. The price is right, some of the bigger 10" books wander towards being the same sort of size and price as a small laptop which defeats the point. For me, this is a good quality portable machine that works quickly and efficiently with decent battery life. For the money, this is the best netbook out there with lots of good upgrade options as a bonus.

Linux version easy to use out of the box, and it gives an easy introduction to Linux if you want to learn more. However, if you don't want to learn more, well ... it all just works nicely. All the main applications you'll need are already loaded by Dell.

Very nice sharp screen for the size.

Part of this new wave of ultra portables and its difficult to stand out with such similar components - 1.6Ghz atom processor, 1GHz ram, 8.9inch glossy screen, XP, WiFi. As a one finger typist the size of the keyboard has little relevence to me. Overall this and others feels like the base for a larger screen model and are not as small as say the old JVC mininote series, I feel they should be a little smaller. There is just too much space surrounding that screen. The screen is your standard 8.9inch glossy with good colour and that gloss gives undeniably good blacks when playing video. Unfortunately the gloss iritates me when internet browsing, word processing etc as it acts just like a mirror. I debate the obsession with this on almost all webbooks. The choice of a solid state drive sounded good to me - a notebook with no moving parts and though 8GB is small, larger ones are available. Unfortunately there doesn't seem any great advantages of the low capacity SSD in terms of battery life, boot times or performance and standard hard disks can survive drops these days denying it even that advantage. Pioneering yes, a sales point, no. Style wise it wins as the design includes the standard battery within the nice curved lines of the notebook and not protruding. The laquer black looks are attenuated a little when you realise its mid 1980's shiny black plastc - oh well. Probably the nicest looking and generally well made of what are basically generic component, low spec, cheap and chearful mini laptops intended as a little runabout to your main laptop. If the market had not been artificially created by getting one free with mobile broadband I doubt they would have gained popularity. Overall I liked it but have gone retro with a JVC mini note - matt, but great screan, truly tiny and made of very resistant metal.

Great little laptop, screen is bright and clear, webcam and mic work well, battery life isnt bad.
Couple of annoying things, the screen doesn't open back enough for my liking and the full stop key is way too small. Apart from that its good for the price. It will also make for a good hackintosh apparently.

  Dell Mini Revelation

For those who might still be trying to decide on which netbook to get, the Dell Mini 9 has in my opinion gone right to the top of the pile. I previously had an Eee PC and that was good. But the Dell Mini offers a lot more: quality build with a solid feel, nice glossy surface, speed, a very good LCD screen, and ports in the right places. I use it for connecting to the internet for surfing and email, word processing, presentations and skype. In every instance it has done everything I have asked of it effortlessly - and the big surprise for me has been the speed. It runs faster than everything else I have including 2 top-of-the-line Apple notebooks.

I sat beside an important-looking gentleman on the train just the other day and he turned on his 12inch laptop: 2 full minutes later he was still waiting for complete boot up. At such times, it becomes very evident that Dell's mini bundle of efficiency is not only good value for money, but the productivity gains are more impressive than I anticipated. My Mini boots in 25 seconds and I am already working my way through my first web-based email inside 2 minutes. The network card is excellent: the power and range of detection of available networks is quite simply incredible.

So for those seriously interested in being able to carry their work with them in a small package that does everything one needs to do on-the-road, the Dell Mini 9 is perfect.
