Dell Inspiron™ 1300 PC Notebook

This is a lovely little second PC. I have purchased it to use as a tool to surf the internet around my home via its in built wifi card, and so far it is performing admirably. It was supplied to me running Windows Vista, however I have made a seamless transition to Linux. It runs both operating systems and associated software well with little to no slow down even with more memory intensive software.

Overall I would recommend this machine as an office laptop or second PC for anyone looking for a system on a budget.

There are however a couple of things to take into account:

-- Battery life. The supplied standard battery only has an expect life of approx 2 hours from a full charge, but obviously running Wifi and using disk drives etc. can drastically reduce this. However this can be remedied with the official Dell high capacity batteries available elsewhere on Ebay for very reasonable prices.

--Size. Despite only having a 15.4" screen the casing for the laptop is still pretty sizable. there is a wide frame around both the monitor and keyboard, that could with a little more forethought have been eliminated to make it that much more portable. The thickness however is very good for a laptop of this age and spec.

If this doesn't concern you too much (as it didn't me) then don't hesitate to get this great piece of kit!

Great little laptop, supports a maximum of 2 gigs of ddr 533 memory and will take any pentium/celeron M processor. I upgraded the celeron 1.5ghz to a 2.13 ghz cpu - very easy access to the cpu, it has its own little cover on the bottom of the laptop (1 screw only!). Ram is also as easy to upgrade. Screen is crystal clear and you can get pleny of spare parts on eBay for this model. Comes with XP Home licence. It has 3 USB 2 Ports and a VGA out (VGA out has no screw holes so you cannot fasten a vga lead securely), a com port and parallel port. I have had my Inspiron now for 3 faultless years.

Good Points: Worked well for about the first 6 months after purchasing it.

General comments: My Dell Inspiron laptop sometimes overheats, my internal port(?) (the place where the charger fits) is broken and practically unfixable unless (I've been told by a pc technician) I pay so much money that I could buy a new laptop which I plan on eventually doing. Poor battery life, shuts down and freezes of its own accord, noisy fan - and what's also annoying is I virused scanned and defragmented practically everday so it's no even as if the freezing ect was caused by carelessness.

been pondering over a laptop for a while, but didnt realy want to buy a new one

got this one of ebay for for £100 with windows disk, but no drivers, but that was no problem i downloaded them online.

overall a good laptop in good condition for the price.

doesnt have much video memory, so if your looking for something to game on, a inspiron 1300 isnt for you, if your looking for something to do your colleg/uni work on, or just for general browsing etc.

a inspiron 1300 is perfect and fast enough, hard drive space lacks at 40 gig though, so if you want space, use a usb external or upgrade to a 120 gig drive

Originally bought for spare parts as advised laptop was not working, however attached power supply and laptop powered up. Unfortunately the hard drive has failed. This was a better buy than expected and is to good to disassemble for spare parts, will probably replace hard drive and find a new home for it.

it was cheap it is a good product in really good condition loved it the laptop has got a lot of good features the postage was also really quick

In general terms I am satisfied with this notebook, it's not the best for professional matters but is a very good notebook to keep at home just to surf the web, send/receive emails etc...Also has a good price and robust structure.

What do I love about this laptop? Everything. It is exactly what I have been after for a long time. I bought it as I have a lot of paperwork to do that would otherwise necessitate lengthy sessions in an office where I would rather not be.
To be honest I also bought it so I could play online poker, and watch catch up TV in bed :)
Getting back to the laptop, however; the guy I bought it from, Nick, was one of the most pleasant people I have dealt with, on or off Ebay. He pointed out a minor fault, which showed me instantly that he was honest and upfront. Without making this into an extended feedback, I have to say it was a pleasure to do business with this guy.
I had tried to buy several laptops and kept getting outbid on them, so when I found I had won this auction I was over the moon. At the cost of a few pounds I was able to buy a new power lead on Ebay and now....I have become lazier than ever. I even take my laptop to work with me now.
When I come across decent, honest people on Ebay, it renews my somewhat shaky faith in human nature.
I hope this is the kind of thing this review calls for.
