The Deliverance
Review created: 15/02/09(updated 25/02/09)

Starring: Burt reynolds, Ned Beatty, Jon Voight, Ronny Cox and a number of less well known actors which play the roles of the hill billy's in this movie.
This movie tells the story of 4 average but adventurous men from Atlanta going for a white water canoe trip. They drive their cars to some up-river starting place nearby a village along the Cahulawassee river in Georgia. The locals of that village are portrayed as hill billy's. One of them, a boy with a banjo, finds himself musically challenged and this leads to the scene of the "duelling banjo and guitar", which contributed to the fame of this movie.
The trip turns into a disaster. They set up a camp for the night when they get confronted with two "mountain men", hunters who force one of them at gunpoint to provide sexual services. However one of the four men team succeeds to kill one of the mountain men with a bow and arrow. The other one escapes into the wilderness with his gun and of course will try to take revenge.
After discussing the dilemma of what to do, either to report this to the police later on (no cell phones) or to dispose themselves of the body, they choose for the latter option.
Continuing their trip (or should we say ordeal), they are not only confronted with the wild river, but also with the threat of the escaped and armed hill billy.
This movie is very well made; it sketches part of the local population of the villages as degenerated. In my view this goes a bit too far.
The Deliverance not only shows action and suspense in a superbly filmed rural environment, but it also provides for a number of aspects which allow us to think a bit further.
The movie keeps the viewers attention well focused for the entire duration.
Action and nerve racking suspense in a beautiful rural environment! Really a movie worth to see!
