Don't Listen to the UK Critics - Make up Your Own Mind.

THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL MOVIE. It may not be a perfect movie, but it is a good movie. I went to see it on Saturday 3rd November with my husband. Everyone in the audience was laughing throughout... we loved it, and could not comprehend why, while USA and European critics have given Death At A Funeral the thumbs-up, many UK critics have slated it.
Death At A Funeral is a very sharp, modern comedy movie served up in the style of a traditional British sit-com. It starts off quite sedately, setting the scene for what you know is not going to be a straightforward, peaceful send-off for the patriarch of this dysfunctional English family. Without giving too much away, things begin to happen which bring a smile to your face because you can tell that chaos will certainly follow - and it does, with hysterically funny results. Gradually more and more bizarre and chaotic things happen, culminating in an outrageous climax and several shocking revelations.
This movie boasts an impressive cast, which includes Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, Peter Dinklage, Rupert Graves, Alan Tudyk, Daisy Donovan, Andy Nyman, Peter Egan and Jane Asher. Matthew Macfadyen very was well-cast as the very sensible Daniel, who is very gamely trying to keep his head while everyone around him are losing theirs. When he is called upon to deliver a eulogy, it develops from a comically-bad, rambling speech into something very poignant, delivered in a breathtaking way that only Matthew M. knows how. Daisy Donovan was particularly funny as the story went on; her character gradually went from mildly-angry to fire-spitting rage. And Alan Tudyk... well, we could hardly breathe for laughing. To say any more would be to give too much of the plot away.
Sensitive, squeamish or profoundly-righteous people should not rush out to see this film. It is not always politically-correct and can frankly be gross at one point (which may have put some critics off)... but it is wickedly-funny with plenty of laughs, the cast is superb, the timing is spot-on throughout and the writing is pure comic genius. I urge the UK movie-going public to go and see this wonderful comedy, and make up their own minds. Or buy (or rent) it when it's released on DVD.
If only every movie could be as entertaining and funny as this one, the world would be a better place.
