Seems a rare topic to me, saw it years ago, wanted to see it again. Very good for a TV movie. A grim reminder of the present danger of a nuclear exchange. A morbid topic but something very real in our present world, should be seen if you haven't seen it.

  Graphic Detail of Nuclear Explosion

If you want to see a well made 80's classic film about the effects of an all out Nuclear War then this is the film to see.
Watch as the horror unfolds and the dramatic after effects of the Nuclear Fall out.
This will bring a tear to your eye.
Truly shocking.

  The Day After

Bought this because I remember seeing it as a kid - it came out shortly after the British version "Threads" which obviously struck more of a chord than this one did, with its portrayal of more widespread destruction than the american audience found palatable I suspect.
"The Day after" however, started like a cheap TV movie the kind you might watch on a cable channel on a saturday afternoon. The soundtrack seemed off key and raucous to the point it didn't seem to matnch the subject material at all. Nonetheless, as it went on it began to inspire the sense of dread it was designed to until I found myself drawn in to the awful prospect these two dimensional characters were facing.
Maybe not scientifically accurate but to this day it still sends a shiver down my spine. A must for cold war enthusiasts!

  Nuclear Armageddon!
Review created: 15/02/08

A brilliant mimicry of the thought that we were all concerned about back in the 50's and 60's. Yes, I was there, and I occasionally worried about some idiot pushing the button and triggering a nuclear war.
Well, this film gives you some idea of what might have happened if they had done. I love the almost lyrical quality of the ICBMs launching, and the use of external films of nuclear blasts is well interwoven with the studio material.
The post-holocaust struggle of the survivors is frankly boring, but it does wind the film down well. I guess the producers had never heard of 'fimbulwinter', the topic isn't touched. Perhaps they needed to stick to a set running time.
I saw this film on first release, back in the 80's (?), and it stuck in my memory. I am very glad to have seen it again.
Remember that Russia still has these same weapons to hand. Now watch this film and consider whether the risk has passed.
Enjoy!

Unjustly forgotten USA nuclear holocaust drama
Review created: 30/09/06

This is actually a whole lot better than I'd been led to believe; I expected a Damnation Alley-type romp with lots of silly effects and unlikely heroics...in fact The Day After makes for pretty grisly viewing provided you can stand the rather tedious build-up to the actual nuclear attack. Direction style is defo TV movie and though not quite as horrifying as its British cousin Threads, we got some above-average acting, intelligent use of stock footage (the missile-launching sequence is genuinely hair-raising) and a suitably dismal aftermath. My only real gripes are the ludicrous vaporizing Ready Brek skeletons during the attack scenes, like, yeah... Otherwise, a fine if not exactly spirit-lifting way to pass a rainy afternoon.
