as a pink floyd fan since i saw them in 1968 i had to have this cd.i was not expecting floyd excellence but was disapointed because it is slightly bland and average.it just does not excite and borders on musak.

  David Gilmour "On An Island"
Review created: 06/09/06

I bought this CD because I was curious about Dave Gilmour's solo work away from Pink Floyd. Being a Floyd fan for some time now, I must confess that I was sceptical at first because I feel that solo artists can often lose some of the magic they produce whist in a band. However, this was most certainly not the case with "On An Island".
Gilmour's amazing guitar talents are just as prominent here as in the legendary Dark Side Of The Moon album. His vocal talents are also as superb as ever.
If you like Pink Floyd, and if you like David Gilmour, then On An Island is an absolute must!!

  Life After Pink Floyd

If you likes PF then you'll appreciate the sounds on this CD. Very melodic and easily identifiable as David Gilmour. My only criticism is that there is not a lot of diversity. No risks have been taken and the feeling that I had was that the producers were playing very safe, producing a CD that is easy listening with lyrics that are reminisant of the boy band culture we seem to be enjoying.

Just another Gilmour jam - excellent!

This is some of Gilmour's finest work and that includes his time with Floyd. Essentially a very chilled out record; it's in that Pink Floyd territory sound wise but with guests on the album including Crosby, Nash and Richard Wright it's also got a very different feel. Expect Gilmour's blues orientated guitar solos and lap steel work on this. The title track contains, in my opinion, one of his finest guitar solos ever!

Beautiful CD, if somewhat introverted. Has a definite "Floyd" sound to it, and also, what I was mainly after, a David Gilmour sound!!

Well, this is a review of the purchase and not the seller. In actual fact both would run along similar lines ....however.....
On an Island is a MUST purchase for any Floyd fans but just as importantly a must for any fans of guitar led music. There are one or two tracks that should find a way into the best tracks of all time C.D.(seriously !)The purchase was made having seen the last 5 or 6 minutes of the Royal Albert Hall concert on the telly, and subsequent purchase of the D.V.D of the show.As a person who would rarely make an impetuous purchase ...this album might just change my mind !

No mistaking the soft vocals and haunting guitar solos from David Gilmore. This is an album that sounds almost like a new release from Pink Floyd. Guest artists such as Graham Nash, David Crosby, Phil Manzanera and Georgie Fame to name just a few help make this an album to put on your must listen to list.

ON AN ISLAND - DAVID GILMOUR

I am a Pink Floyd fan, and love David Gilmour's guitar work on their albums and their gigs. So, when the new solo album came out I was keen to read any reviews that were around. These were generally good but no one seemed to be raving about it. For that reason, I decided not to buy it new, but wait and obtain it on ebay for less money, in case, (and I really hoped not),it turned out to be a turkey. As it transpires, and only on a single listening so far, I have to say that it does, overall, disappoint. The person I bought it from said he was selling it because 'it wasn't for him', and I can see why. For the most part I would call it 'wishy-washy', with what used to be called in my day,'hippy gumbo'lyrics from his wife, and uninspired dreamy arrangements. Only goodish, not great. Shame. I think, like many artists who go solo, he's missing the restraint and influence of his old fellow band members. REFORM THE FLOYD !

The leading light from Pink Floyd was always going to produce another masterpiece. As the man matures so does his music; the youthfull experimentation is replaced by finely honed contemporary classical music. I am sure that had Mozart, Bach and Beethoven had the musical instruments available to todays artists and composers they would be writing more in the style of the Floyd.

  DAVID GILNOUR ON AN ISLAND

David Gilnour,s on a island is a haunting dreamlike journey to a land without time, next to the sea of mystery. It takes me back to a time of youth sitting on a sandy beach watching the waves roll in . A pretty girl on one hand and just maybe a joint in the other

Where have I heard this before?

It can't be easy for David Gilmour considering his back catalogue and this may be one reason why Pink Floyd have not recorded in 10 yrs or more. Division Bell is a great note to sign off on, one of Floyd's highlights. Any follow-up is almost destined to disappoint and indeed this solo effort does disappoint.
Its nice, safe, verging on bland. a man at peace with himself and the world. Good news for David but not for the listener. Little or no variety, we've heard it all before and done much better.
A brave effort perhaps, but Pink Floyd RIP, as it would be disasterous to end on something as ordinary as this.
Sorry if this all seems very negative, as the CD is not at all bad, just not particularly good. Not one to take to an island, desert or otherwise.

Well, it was obviously gonna sound like Pink Floyd wasn't it, but it really is very good.
Lovely slide guitar sounds, with superb lyrics on some tracks and smooth settling beats.
Definately one for the background eating a picnic down the beach,
or just chilling out at home.

You liked Pink Floyd?
You'll love Dave Gilmour - On An Island. Excellent.

A typical David Gilmour album, you can hear Pink Floyd referencies in it, this album was well produced if you want to try something different, give it a whirl. I recieved this album in a used state in average condition.

This Cd has some wonderfully mellow tracks on it but they are nicely contrasted with some more pacey pieces. It really has the distinctive feel of David Gilmour.

It doesn't really grab one. Some parts are a bit boring. I won this a couple of weeks ago and have only listened to the first couple of tracks, which speaks volumes really.

  Wonderful

As a huge Pink Floyd fan I eagerly awaited this album and I was not at all disappointed with the result. On an island is a beautifully written and performed album – Gilmour says that he feels it is some of the best work he has done in the last 30 years! This album is very chilled out and takes the listener on a journey through a happy period in Gilmour’s life and memories. Fans of Pink Floyds ‘Obscured by clouds’ may especially appreciate this. I listen to this album a lot and was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour perform it live at the Royal Albert hall. I should also state that I have friends who very much like Pink Floyd, but find this album a little slow – as ever variety is the spice of life.
