I have seen this move almost 10 times over the two decades which has passed since it was made in the early 80'ties and I think it is probably the best drama movie ever made about the battle of the Atlantic during WW2. This movie is a very realistic production and with authentic surroundings/scenes and a thrilling story it has to be a knocker. One could argue that the director has some bi-intentions of portraying the grey wolfs as non-nazis doing their duty for 'volk und vaterland',: - They were very skilled and dedicated warriors and they were out on a mission impossible, overwhelmed by superior allied forces in the end. The Tipperary song is obviously taylored for an American audience to 'de-nazify' the crew. But the movie is far too well made, authentic and historically interresting to be shaken by that sort of criticism.
It should be viewed without english dubbing to hear real german language to keep up the authenticity. Soundtrack is also very successful.
Great actors show apparently typical chracters of a german U-boat crew of that time period.
Highly recommended.
