Let's go around blowing up planets using talking bombs.

Low budget. Good effects. Great storyline. Deep frozen captain.

Carpenter at his best.

Bought to replace my video copy that was wearing out!

I LOVE this movie, especially the spin on puts on the usual 'glam' of space-flight.

Here we have a protagonist who only came to be on the ship because he stole the real astronauts' jumpsuit while the latter went loopy.

He now finds that none of guys underwear fits and his main duty consists of mucking-out an alien that's a beachball-shaped flatulent thing with an evil sideline in misleading him, along with crew-mates who treat him only marginally better than the alien.

Ah! bombs that argue back before doing what bombs are supposed to, the Captain dead and in deep-freeze, but still able to communicate!

Way before Red Dwarf (and I love that too).

One to watch and savour.

I like this film a lot, first saw it over 20 years ago and remember almost all of it untill today when I got it and I'd forgotten all about the orange space hopper alien that escapes on the ship, well funny. The bomb they have to keep going outside in the spacesuits to talk it out of detonating as its stuck etc.is very funny too, well worth a watch in my view but then I like old sci fi films :-)

  John Carpenter's Dark Star
Review created: 23/01/09

THis is a young John Carpenters student film that became a massive cinematic hit. It was also a pre-cursor to "Alien"

Briiliant film, if you see one for sale BUY IT !!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunatley i never received the above DVD - this was not for the want of trying by the seller - i wanted the DVD for my Father in Law as it it a film that he enjoys and laughs a lot at - he has seen it many times and continues to laugh every time - it is nice to see people enjoy themselves and basically it is a small price to pay.

  Classic Sci Fi/Comedy 'B' Movie!
Review created: 09/04/08

A classic film from the 1970s that I saw as a kid and never forgot. Essentially this is a very low budget space comedy, but the moody style perfectly portrays the madness that spending years in deep space is likely to bring. Very few movies can be both funny and deeply atmospheric at the same time.

There are some truly hilarious moments, as well as a great central story line, concerning the computers who think for themselves. "I think, therefore I am. Let there be light!"

If you like low budget films, this one has everything and should be in everybody's library.

A John Carpenter classic, Without doubt. The trouble with the film is it's futuristic concept is hindered with the 60's mentality. It is more a reflection on 60's culture than of any futuristic prediction. A worthy stab at some intrinsic philosophical questions, but very dated. It will only induce longing for the 70's space ideal without any special effects. A heavyweight concept in a lightweight interpritation due to zeitgeist over zeilots. This is a classic which I would actually ENJOY being remade. the ingredients are there, but the finished article is'nt. DEANDRUM7
