Dads Army Series 4
If one has a liking for the absurdity of the wartime years as seen in the rationing, blackout, austerity, and the Homeguard then this is for you. Although not superslick, americanised dialogue, and certainly not cutting edge humour, Dads Army still maintains the homespun, idealistic naivety that was prevalent during the war years. The characterisation is supreme, and the pitfalls of a hapless but ingenious group of wartime defenders shines through. Many of the jokes are telegraphed, many of the slapstick occurrences are expected, yet this in no way deflects from its feelings of warmth and honesty. I would recommend this series to anyone wanting to smile and reflect on the battles that were fought, not just on foreign fields, but the hardship, tenacity and comradeship that was forged on British soil in those dark days. I highly recommend series 1 to 5, but I do tend to think that from series 6 onwards the stories lack a certain something.
