I was interested to see how well the book would be adapted to the movie. I had read the book in a day and a half because I just couldn't put it down. I was also wondering how interesting the movie would be. As a thriller, the thrill came from not knowing what would happen next, and having read the book, I already knew what would happen. The initial reviews were discouraging, saying the movie was too long, had too much exposition, not enough "chemistry" between the main characters, etc. I was pleasantly surprised. The time frame for the movie is about a day. After all, how much chemistry can you develop when just getting through the day uses all your energy? The 2+ hours were gone before I knew it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and hated to see it end

I love the way this follows the story of the life & love of Jesus, whom I have believed all my life, since a child, that he loved Mary Magdalene. I don't like the fact that it doesn't follow the book as well as it should, especially the ending, when the heroine meets her grandmother & should have met her brother as well.

Although not a fan of the Freemasons (sorry, just a minor thing), I do like the fact that this shows them to be a follow-on of the Knights Templar. I also love the fact that so many historical facts are included in the movie, even though they are included with a load of lies as well. You have to be a history buff to know the difference, unfortunately.

If you liked the book, you will like the movie, especially Sir Ian's OTT performance, which I found one of the best things about the movie.

The film is based around the book by Dan Brown and while the film is enjoyable to watch there are key elements in the book that have been missed out in the film.

  Disappointed!
Review created: 26/01/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Having read the book I assumed it would translate into a fast moving, well made, visually dynamic film. Of course it did!
BUT in my opinion, it lacked attention to detail, depth and appeared somewhat disjointed. But how many films improve on the original book? Not many.
This book is long, multi-layered, with great attention paid to the interpretation of the complex codes. I believe these were not fully explained in the film.
To achieve this in a two-hour movie would be asking the impossible and frankly, if I had not read the book in advance, I would have failed to fathom much the plot!
In addition, the two central characters were somewhat shallow in their fictional roles, characterisation rather weak and their evolving personal relationship neither convincing nor credible.
Not enough time was spent on the opening sequence of the discovery of
curator's murder with its string of oblique codes. It was neither grizzly or graphic enough for my liking!
There were a few unnecessary changes toward the finish of the film which too felt rushed.
The result was a fairly entertaining film which missed the boat.

Fantastic film! I had already seen Angels and Demons which was brilliant and was not aware at the time it was a follow on for the Da Vinci Code so I just had to see it. I love Tom Hanks. he is such a great actor. It might not be everyones cup of tea but its certainly my type of film.

  HOLY!!!!!!!.............Grail
Review created: 12/05/09(updated 12/05/09)

In the beginning there was "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" and Lo, Dan Brown did gaze upon this and saw that it was good, and he took these bare bones and made a skeleton, but this frame needed substance to flesh it out,so he took a rib from it's body and drew it across the face of the deep and created a commercial success unlike the original and placed it in the firmament that is the cinema. The Da Vinci Code is compelling and convincing and quite rightly so, as the source of the evidence is difficult to refute. The storyline undoubtedly is one of the best ever, in there being a bloodline from Christ to the present day, and the Churches strong desire to prevent this knowledge emerging into the light of day. Tom Hanks presents another of his facets in the form of Robert Langdon, and very convincingly, Alfred Molina sheds his four mechanical arms and dons a cassock to become a cardinal who is less than holy, and we must give thanks for the glorious union between Jesus and Mary Magdalene for ultimately producing Sophie Neveu, the cutest cryptologist in the department(played by Audrey Tatou),and Ian McKellen can always be relied upon for providing substance to the proceedings. In the film You are swiftly and eagerly propelled along through every twist and turn,so much so that you overlook the shortfalls and sheer fabrications of the plot until you arrive at a rather unconvincing conclusion,Having said this, if you ignore or don't care about the inaccuracies of the plot then this is a very good film and worth seeing for the gems of truth hidden within.Let us all pray for Ron Howard.Amen.

Over-hyped film based on the controversial story
Review created: 03/04/09
by:

Pretty much everyone has heard of this film. The story is well researched and is a great conspiracy theory. The fast-paced race solving the long trail of puzzles behind a murder is enjoyable but the major surprising 'twist' which is revealed near the end of the film is blindingly obvious half way through! The Cert 12 status is well deserved as there are some violent scenes (self torture) which some may find disturbing. On the whole an entertaining film which shouldn't be taken too seriously.

  Da Vinci Code review
Review created: 29/08/08
by:

This is an intreaging story about the paper chase trying to find the holy grail. It had religous connections and several referances to Leonardo Da Vini.
At times I found it hard to follow as a lot of the language in Latin and french which was covered with sub titles, especially in the early part of the film.
The film itself was interesting and kept watchers gripped until the end as they neared the location of the holy grail. There was a mixture of vilance, horror and interesting elements to the film.
I had to watch the DVD twice to fully understand the film and to follow events to get a better understanding of the story.

I like this film but a disappointment after reading the book. Tom Hanks was like a block of wood in this NO acting what so ever thought I guess HE though he didnt have to act since the book was a runaway success. I give this film a 7 because of Tom Hanks but I give the book 15/10 if thats possible. Just a ater thought the lighting could have been a bit better it was just too dark......

  The Da Vinci Code DVD
Review created: 06/04/08

I bought this DVD because I didn't want to be the only person in existace who hadnt seen this film, I struggled to get interested in the book and eventually gave up, in my opinion the film was no better, it was slow to get started and went downhill from there, the 'story' was facinating but could have been told on 20 minutes. This is my opinion and is in no way a critism of Dan Brown or the film makers, it just wasnt for me.

  The Da Vinci Code
Review created: 17/03/08

Anything with Tom Hanks has to be good in my book, as always a pleasure to watch. The story had a lot of twists and turns as you may expect, but a bit of a predictable ending I thought. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed as did my 13 year old son who talked about it later. True Catholics, like my late mother, I'm afraid would hate it.
