Dan Brown's international bestseller comes alive in the film The Da Vinci Code, directed by Academy Award Winner Ron Howard.

Join symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tauton) in their thrilling quest to solve a bizarre murder mystery that will take them from Paris to London-and behind the veil of a mysterious ancient society, where they discover a secret so powerful it could shake the very foundation of mankind.

Very good, shot well with good all round performances.
But you should have a read of the book first, as some bits are of course always missed out, and it will make the story much easier to follow.
A good edition to your DVD collection.

The Da Vinci Code (DVD Extras Disc)
Directed by: Ron Howard
Starring: Tom Hanks, Jean Reano, Ian McKellen, Audrey Tautou
Certificate: 12
Running time: 149 Min

We get asked to review things all the time, however, when we were looking to review The Da Vinci Code on DVD, the funny thing was, they only sent the extras disc, so if you want to know what we thought of the film, click here. The Bik had the task of looking at the extras, over to you matey.....

I am in the unique position of not actually having seen the film that the extras disc is from. That having been said, the extras disc did make me want to see it. The disc itself was based around the Director, Ron Howard and the writer of the book on which the film is based, Dan Brown. There is lots of footage concerned with the setting up of the film, the locations etc, but these seem to be repeated in different parts of the disc.
The interview with the director is informative and interesting. But it is the interview with Dan Brown that proved the most frustrating, there were flashy titles which came up announcing what the subject was that Mr Brown was going to discuss and then he would talk for 2 to 3 minutes then another flashy title and another 2-3 mins, why?, why they didn’t just let him ramble in a single interview?. It just panged of trying to fill out the disc on the sensationalism of the author.

All in all entertaining if not just a little bit irritating.

trite old rubbish - avoid if you have a brain

1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Jeez... or should i say Holy Mary Magdelen "lover of god"... if you read the book and thought that was trite old shite, then you will NOT like the film either.

Tom Hanks is of course a great actor, and does what he can, but it's a mind numbing flick, with nothing to save it from being a boring "American adventure in Europe".

Sure the basic idea that Jesus has living descendants (after having a child with Mary Magdelen) is a fascinating one.. and no doubt the patriarchal catholic church WOULD do everything to prevent a WOMAN being shown as the true "hold grail".

Trouble is the rest of the plotline which is meant to carry this story, doesn't make the grade, and the whole film is just a nonsense.

Go for a run, open a bottle of beer, or re-read a few pages of you favourite book... in fact go to bed 90 mins earlier than usual, or even go sweep the pavement...any of these will be a more filfilling use of time.

P

To be honest, the book is better, but thats always the way. Most of the details in the book / film require a giant leap of faith at times, but its still worth a watch.

Tom Hanks was perfect for Robert Langdon.

Ron Howard's film is better served up second time around and should be re-watched by the scornful naysayers.

  DA VINCI CODE
Review created: 03/01/09

Heard so much about the movie , bought it to watch at my leisure at home.
Viewed it with family at first but realised that the chatter etc from them during the film I missed vital dialogue which explained a lot about why and what was happening so, watched it again a few days later ...on my own...
A real in depth story ...unless you know a few basic facts from the Bible you would be lost watching this....at times seems a little over the top but not unbelievably so. You can imagine the "behind the scenes" work of some within the church, the quest they had to fufill and how some have throughout history layed down their lives to protect secrets unknown to the outside world.
Tom Hanks as usual is a superb actor as were all the others in the film. On the whole it was a "food for thought" film which got you thinking, helped me to understand all about certain signs and symbols which I have come across during my own lifetime....and didnt know what or where they were from.....a case of..."oh thats what it means!" Better late than never I suppose?!
Not for kids ......definately one to have a discussion about after.

This book is compelling reading - fantastic

Recommended by a friend. But, it is best to read Angels and Demons first, gives you a bit of an insight to understanding the high tech level.
Great reads, both of them.

The most famous novel of the noughties
Review created: 12/08/08

The novel by dan brown was the big hit of teh early noughties. The film looked at cashing in on the money making idea and did just that. Bringing togther a superb cast of americans and europeans, the film is great for people who have read or havent even heard of the book.

  The book first
Review created: 30/07/08
by:

This film is a good adaptation of the book.
I wonder however if it's impossible to appreciate the complexity of the story without having read the book.
Also, without knowledge of the book, the film may seem a little too cryptic. I may be wrong, but as someone who read the book first, I was so much more enthralled than I think I would have been otherwise.

  The Da Vinci Code
Review created: 19/07/08
by:

A couple of years ago, I first read the Dan Brown book the Da Vinci code. I read it before all the hype or in fact actually before the book started becoming massive. Admittedly, I don't read many books as often as I should, however I had a long journey planned and needed something to read, a quick look at some of the new books on display I liked what I read on the back cover. I am also not in the slightest bit religious, however as I read on I found it to be a brilliantly done and a very exciting, if not fictious alternate story concerning historic events. I went to see the film a while after the book had come out and really enjoyed it, it stuck very closely to the book, only a few minor details were changed which involved I believe Sony sponsorship from what I could see! It was such a gripping film it was over before I realized, purely because I was concentrating so hard, the people I were with also enjoyed it. The film was a very fitting replication of the book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has either read the book but not yet seen the film, or vice versa.
