I first heard this album in its shorter cassette form when I was twelve. It was my favourite throughout high-school, and when I heard one of the songs from it recently, I decided to buy it again on cd. And guess what - it's still a great album! Long live teenage angst!

Now if you like The Cure and havent heard this album then i highly reccomend you do. This is the early stuff, very raw and original. This is the first cure album i heard and there is a video to go with it. Very trippy. Robert Smith is a legend in his own right, exelent voice, very talented artist in my veiw.

Fantastic early greatest hits CD by one of the worlds top bands. Still going today Robert Smith continues to write brilliant songs and this greatest hits CD is a must for all fans and people new to the group too.

The Cure - Staring At The Sea (CD 2000)

This compilation is an excellent selection from one of the most important bands of the eighties. "The Cure" never slotted easily into any particular musical category, but carved out a place for themselves with their distinctive sound. They catered to teenage angst and a lot of their early songs were quite dark e.g. "Killing an Arab", which relates to the novel by Jean-Paul Sartre and does not have racist overtones, as some have suggested. However, all their songs are underpinned by good musicianship. To sum up, this album is well worth adding to your collection.

  the cure-THE singles
Review created: 24/08/08

this compilation album is totally brilliant!
"the singles" showcases the cures early music perfectly and when listening to it all the way through you can hear the changes in the bands music as the eighties got older.
songs like 'charlotte sometimes' and 'night like this' have a goth feel to them and others are upbeat and cheery like the classic 'lovecats','close to me' and 'in between days'. some songs seem beautifully nonsensical, like 'the caterpillar' and others have something to say, like 'jumping someone elses train'.
I cant fault this, i remember the first cure song i ever heard and it was lullaby, which unfortunately is not on this album, but i fell in love when i heard close to me as a child at butlins. i played catch up with the earlier albums and this comp. has a really good cross section of their early music.
i love it, nostalgia trip for those like me born right at the end of the 70s.
GO BUY IT!

The Cure - Staring At The Sea - The Singles (1986).
Review created: 05/08/07

This has every Cure single up until 1985, including my favourite Cure track of all time - Charlotte Sometimes - which was never included on any album prior to this one. We travel from the Camus inspired 'Killing An Arab', through 'A Forest' and the perfect pop of 'Let's Go To Bed' and 'The Love Cats', to finish with 'Close To Me' and 'A Night Like This', from the tremendous 1985 LP 'The Head On The Door' - possibly the best album ever made. I am engaged at present in upgrading my tape and vinyl Cure collection to CD, but if you are new to The Cure this album makes a great taster. I can guarantee you will soon be trying to accumulate their entire back catalogue.
