This film depicts the grim reality of life serving in the Wehrmacht in 1943 on the Eastern Front. With the ever advancing Russians with whom ferious retibution is feared. The Platoon discovers its instinct for war is greater than their instict for survival. The film centres on 2 German officers(played by James Mason and James Coburn, one is hell bent on Glory and the other survival. The title is based on the German Military Medal the Iron Cross and the follows the steps some officers took their units and men in pursuit of glory. The action is disturbing but compelling.
