  TV Peroid Drama - Fantastic

The thing I love about Cranford is that it gives you a valuable insight into the lives of a whole cross section of society from the struggling working class to the aristocracy and everything inbetween. This is very rare as most period dramas would tend to focus on just one main family or storyline, but here you have various characters, families and friends from all walks of life and each of them fascinating in their own way. The scenes and costumes are raw and realistic, the acting outstanding, transporting you into their lives and situations. It is period drama in the best sense of the word as there is a fair dose of tragedy and sadness. This however, is well balanced by some very humorous portrayals and scenarios, as well as some wonderful romances and the joy of life in the Cranford community! All in all, a very worthwhile purchase with a magnificent cast and brilliant depiction of how life used to be in England!

Another fantastic period drama from the BBC. A stellar cast portrays life in a small community in the 1850's. It shows what it was like for rich and poor alike and it definately transported me into the story. Fantastic.

I loved this DVD! I decided to buy it after watching Cranford on BBC 1. Cranford is about a small village, in which everyone knows everyone, and the gossip travles like wild fire, often getting twisted beyond belief! A major railway now threatens the peace and tranquillity of Cranford, bringing town folk in, and the residents are not too happy with the new modernisations!
Friendships are formed, and lost, over the duration of the DVD. Love found, lost, and then found again, and some characters come to meet an untimely end.
Great DVD for all the family, with lots of comedy moments from Mrs Pole, the local busy body! You chance to see how an old town works, and sticks together when situations demand for it!
The DVD is split into 4 different, 1 hour episodes, just as it was shown on the television.

I bought the Cranford DVD box set for my mother on Mothers Day, she was so pleased with it. I won it for a resonable price, the postage was ok too.

This BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's books about Cranford has everything: excellent script, superb settings, fine sets and costumes, brilliant cast. For what more could a devotee of English nineteenth century classic novels ask?

  BBC At It's Best!

The BBC never ceases to amaze me and entertain me. With some of British finest actors/actresses, the casting is excellent. A great period drama which makes you glad for our modern world (antibiotics being one of them!). Well worth every penny and one that I will watch time and time again.

the well constructed tv series with subtle humour.watch it.Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.
