The Cook Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (DVD 2003)

AWESOME FILM A MUST SEE FOR EVERYONE B4 THEY DIE this is the best film i have seen in my entire life................and i have a copy just in case the original breaks ..

Well directed film, not seen for a long time, bought from eBay as found currently expensive in shops

Very dark and visceral film, plays out like a sort of vanitas painting. Left me feeling distrubed to the core.

As a movie, I can only echo what the others have said. Sumptious, stunning visually awesome. Any frame of the movie looks like a work of art. The music, by Michael Nyman is a perfect accompaniment to the feast, and the acting...well. The whole movie is so intense it's not easy to judge who's acting out of their skin and who's just overwhelmed by the experience.

However, the version I recieved on my disc was a partial pan and scan, Not full screen, but not in the proper dimensions. Not intensely distracting, but the scan couldn't even include the whole titles. The _ook, The Thie_ etc. Still, recommended to those with a strong stomach.

This film was recommended to me by a friend and with the cast list it sports was a easy decision to make. I was not diasppointed, set in a hugely atmospheric and gothic restaurant, the kitchens are almost cathedral like, the action is always teetering on the surreal and the characters mainly very ugly individuals. The whole thing is driven along by the love affair starting (in the restaurant's ladies loo!) and then what appears to be the kitchen's pantry by Mirren and Roth. This love affair is played graphically and with great energy from the two participants. All culminates in a shocking but compelling finale. Definitely not for the faint hearted but a superbly shot and directed film that draws you in and then spits you out. Will watch again very soon.

I love this movie, it's like no other, with an atmosphere both strange and surreal. All of the action takes place in a restaurant, but this is not your average restaurant .... strange things happen here which are never explained. Not what I would call a feelgood movie, but fascinating and compelling. Helen Mirren is wonderful as ever, as the ignored but rebellious wife. Definitely one you'll want to watch more than once.
