An intelligent sci - fi film . 4 stars!!!

To anyone who thinks that science fiction is about action-packed escapism, with ray guns and scary monsters, as all those who have jumped on the Star Wars bandwagon in the last 25 years would have us believe, watch this film. Science fiction can be plausible, intelligent and - shock, horror - have things to say just like any other form of drama. I have a personal fondness for this film for that reason, and therefore am prepared to forgive its occasional lapse into schmaltz. It's refreshing to see something that gives us a credible glimpse into what our first contact with an alien intelligence might actually be like, and how we might react to it.
Also this disc represents top value for a DVD:... here's what you get for your money:
*No less than THREE full-length audio commentaries - one from Jodie Foster, one from the director and producer, and one from the Special Effects men. And these are genuine commentaries too, not cobbled together from interviews - they are with you as you watch the film, commenting on everything you see as you see it. Together they are a wonderful eye-opener into how a film like this is made.
* Isolated music score - this option means that the film is silent for a lot of the time but provides a fascinating alternative way to view many scenes.
* Special effects featurette; sort of a technical showreel showing how many shots were composited -even the ones that don't look like FX shots.
* Production notes, the usual scene access & trailers
None of this is the cheap promo stuff that is thrown carelessly onto many discs; somebody cared enough about this film to make a real effort. all of this means you have to watch this film at least four times before you're exhausted all the disc has to offer.

I bought this film as the storyline means alot to me. I run seti@home and believe there is life on another planet. I saw it at the cinema and the thing that blew me away was the amazing opening scene. For about 5 minutes we leave our earth and go into space deeper and deeper as the radio waves of earth get older and older. The film lasts 144 minutes and is gripping from the start to end. I really enjoyed this special edition dvd. It has feature length commentaries and computer animation tests and concepts and special effects designs and much more. 5.1 surround sound is superb and picture quality is perfect.

Finally she hears something from deep within our Galaxy. Her amazing journey has only begun. This film looks at the beliefs of her and all around her. An amazing film that will keep any sci fi fan or astronomer or anyone interested in life beyond our solar system happy. It has a kind of magical feel about it and will leave you asking the question "Is there anybody out there?"

This is a truly fantastic film, and a definite must have for any jodi foster fans out there!!

) Its a fantastic story about a driven astronomer, played by Jodie Foster, who finally triumphs against all the odds to make contact with extra terrestrials from the planet Vega. Its her inspirational journey spanning many years and against many set backs, but some people do believe in her quest and their confidence is finally rewarded. You are left with the feeling that life does exist in our vast universe, 'cus if if doesn't then that's a awful waste.

now this is a film that you can keep watching and never get board with it,

When I was about 11 or so, I saw the movie on TV and it captivated me. After that, I forgot about it and the only thing that I could remember was the title, "Contact", and the deep space scene where Ellie meets her father. Recently, I've been browsing SF movies and that scene came to my mind, I struggled to recall the name of the film because I desperately wanted to see it again. I remembered the name, quickly went on eBay to search for it, found it and ordered right away. When I got it in my mail I was really excited, I watched it and I will watch it again. I don't usually buy DVDs, but this one was definitely worth every penny. Great movie, great actors. Definitely a must see for SF fans.
