This is a worthy piece of beautifully shot film-making with an especially subtle portrayal given by the male lead. It's unarguably a good thing that The Constant Gardener educates us all about the shady work done in Africa by multinational companies, but this film fought shy of tackling the real issue- what if anything should realistically be done about it. The actors were let down by an inconclusive and unlikely plot (the film's a heavily adapted version of the novel), that presents a wholly inexplicable match between a conservative British diplomat and an attractive and rich young woman whom everyone except the diplomat can easily spot is about to naively get herself in real trouble attacking vested interests abroad with links to the British government. The film is plotted as though the 1960s never happened and resistance to multinational crime is still at the stage of lone voices heroically but wholly ineffectively trying to present the truth to power (bizarrely in this film in which the British government are implicated, the heroine dies trying to report a pharmaceutical abuse to the very government who are complicit in the abuse). That said, one point the film did make very well is how impossible it is to save even one life in the context of endemic disadvantage and lawlessness as it exists in Africa - the remark is made as one child is thrown off a life-saving 'plane, "it's how things are in Africa". If this film had dealt more deeply with those complexities it would have had greater logical consistency, but it probably also would have been less palatable to its target audience.

This is an angst-ridden film about Africa told almost entirely from a white upper-middle class persepctive. The film-makers set up a charity as a result of making it and say their director really understood the plight of all those Africans who serve as voiceless landscape in its background. In sum, this film is colonial but aspires to some form of post-colonial complexity that it just hasn't thought through. It does make you think though, but ultimately mostly about how rich and privileged you'd have to be to really think this kind of message was going to "save" Africa. The thing about guilt is, it's not an end in itself. Ultimately it's self-serving unless it's rigourously used to plot out a workable response for change.

  Trying to be too clever?

An OK'ish film ........... a little on the slow side and a little too predictable.

Not the strongest of story lines, but by no means the worst and the biggest let down ....... the ending!

Could have been so much more with a stronger script ........ had I viewed it in a cinema, having paid a premium to see it, I would have been very let down. However having paid a mere few pounds for a DVD, it's something to watch on a wet weekend, when you have nothing else worth doing.

8/10 for acting ..... 4/10 for Story Line

Love this film! Fab Buy could watch it over and over many thanks!

its the sort of film that inspires you to do good things and shows you how lucky you've got it,

one of them films where you have to listen carefully to follow, that is the only downfall to this ilm but other than that its top notch! haha

What can I say? A desperately average film, with a linear, predictable and largely unexciting story.

It has to be said because so many big things have been said about this film, and yet it's just not all that.
It's by no means a bad film, it just sits in the stack with those many other films that have covered similar ground.

Of course we are dealing with a high calibre of film-making here - good cast, good production and so on.
But that only raises the bar so much in my opinion - I wanted to engage more feeling than I was able to. For some reason it didn't grab me as much as I had anticipated, much more just bounced off me.

Preconceptions can tarnish a film, and perhaps that's part of my problem here. Saying that, you watch it once and you have all that you can obtain from it. It's worth a watch, but not worth buying - add it to the rent list, just dont prioritise it.

I thought i would really enjoy this film as the story line is compelling. However it was filmed in a style that i am not too keen on. The camera was jerky and it felt like you were bumping along the dusty roads with them. Great if you like to feel like you are there too but made it hard for me to focus on the film.

A very dark but eye-opening film

This film was grim. If you like grim films then you'll love this one. It tackles corruption on many levels both in Britain and Africa. It takes you into a shocking world of people starving, being murdered or taken into slavery and such-like. It opens your eyes to things you never dreamt went on.
Don't watch it if you are on a romantic night out, it won't work. This film is very powerful and thought-provoking and makes you feel very blessed with the life you have, however bad it may seem to be. Don't expect it to be fun! Was very taken by it.

  Not prime Le Carre
Review created: 07/05/08

Disappointing after other John Le Carre books and films, admittedly from the time of the Soviet era. The plot was not easy to penetrate, but not in the style of the old John Le Carre. It left me wondering, whether this was really written by the master. Sadly Rachel's presence was also very short-cut, can't honestly say I would wish to watch it again.

A fim with a conscience. This is becoming scarily regular for me.
It has a similar feel to Blood diamond and provokes real sobering thought.
Hopefully enough thinking people will promote action.
Spectacular filing of the African continent - accurate to fine detail.
I've spent enough time there to spot a hoax.
I could even smell the food, the opel, and the heat.
Worth watching at least 5 or 6 times before you could say you get it - espcially in its fine details

In my opinion, this film is superb. The performances of Fiennes and Weiss are remarkable - Fiennes portrays the English stiff upper lipped diplomat in the face of horrendous pressure and adversity, whilst Weiss (whose best performance ever was probably in Constantine) plays a character who is full of courage and bravado to the point of lacking judgement. Truly a "must see" movie.

  Must Watch
Review created: 25/01/08

The film is highly emotive and is handled excellently by sound but subtle directing and excellent performances, especially from the leading cast.

Everyone should watch this, it is an opener for anyone who thinks that large pharmaceutical companies (any large multi-national in reality) are really 'a family company'...

This was a truly disappointing film yet it is an enigma.
Photography is superb and so is the acting yet after spending 23 years in Africa I soon saw they did not understand it or even scratch the surface.
This may be due to the book which I have not read yet was a total fan of McCarry's early books.
The very weakness and naivety of the main character is a huge problem and the ending somewhat ridiculous - how on earth could such a person hold down a diplomatic job in Africa as portrayed in the film?
The story is more than plausible and the wife quite typical of some of the "African wives" in my own experience yet the film squandered and lost so much that I can only give it a dubious 3 - mainly for photography.

Review created: 06/10/06

I had read the book, which is one of my favourite Le Carre novels. I was interested to see how well it had transferred to the screen and was most impressed. It is true to the book, though of course some minor threads are left out and some updated, and is deeply moving and convincing. Unfortunately, the international corruption is only too easy to believe. Superb performances by all the cast, including some delightful and tragic children.

I decided to buy this title as it has Ralph fiennes in it. I think he is a very talented actor and I thought he was brilliant in both Wuthering Heights and Schindlers list. The film itself was okay and the plot so-so. If Ralph wasnt in it i would not have liked it as much!

Excellent film, shows all the hypocracy in politics. Is one of the few films that I have seen which has been raved about by film critics that actually is very good.
The story is full of twists and turns , but revolves around a diplomats wife being murdered .......and why.
Heard about the film and someone on e-bat was selling at the right price , guarenteeing it was not a copy. Dont like copies as the quality is never as good as an original DVD.

I suppose I bought this DVD after spotting it on eBay because I had heard a good review of the film on the radio, and I do like Ralph Fiennes. It was a good film, very well acted but I must admit I found the political aspects of it far too complicated and distracting and it tended to spoil the film for me. I did watch it to the end but it was a bit hard going at times.

  Love.At any cost.

This, directed by Fernando Meirelles was released in 2005.It is an adaptation of the 2001 novel by John le Carré.The Constant Gardener is an Academy Award,BAFTA,and Golden Globe Award-winning film. The film has a different ending than that within the book.

It tells the story of Justin Quayle, who finds his wife murdered and seeks to uncover the reasons behind her death.

The story was filmed in Loiyangalani and the slums of Kibera,Kenya. The situation affected the cast and crew to the extent that they set up the Constant Gardener Trust in order to provide basic education around these villages.

Rachel Weisz won the Best Supporting Actress at the 2005 Golden Globes for her performance in the film,as well as the 2005 Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. These awards are fully deserved and she stands out in the film even if she is at times, only seemingly a mouthpiece for the script's social concerns.

Those concerns mainly focus on the plight of the African people who are dying of AIDS and TB while the world's major pharmaceutical companies continue to get richer. The film details a conspiracy in which one company is illegally testing unfinished drugs on poor African villagers with fatal and shocking results. Its an engrossing, disturbing and thought provoking film with excellent performances. For me,this just missed out on a 5/5 rating.

Whilst this is stunning to watch at times, there are other moments where the footage seems almost amatuer and hand-held camera like.Is this good or bad?You decide.

You would be crazy not to rent or buy this film. The cast are superb throughout and it is also beautifully shot, with a fantastically atmospheric soundtrack.
