This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- [H]e does what he does best, plying his husky, breathy tone with unhurried insistence and leaving his compatriots -- a stellar septet hand-picked for his sole turn as leader under Orrin Keepnews' watch -- room to rise to his standard. Down Beat
