On 2008's VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS, Coldplay follows up X&Y's accessible anthems by tweaking its signature Britpop sound with the aid of renowned producer Brian Eno, celebrated not only for his own innovative ambient albums, but also for his behind-the-boards work with U2. Eno's contributions don't result in a ZOOROPA-like foray into dance-pop, however--VIVA LA VIDA sticks with Coldplay's knack for mid-tempo majesty, but expands these tracks with studio bells and whistles that pull the group out of its stadium-ready comfort zone.
Though the pulsing instrumental opener, "Life in Technicolor," might make listeners think that they're accidentally playing the latest M83 album, VIVA asserts itself as a Coldplay outing with "Cemeteries of London," a dreamy tune that finds Martin singing in a comfortable middle register. Still, the group's quest for a different sound is exemplified by the three distinctly different parts of "42," which range from piano ballad to post-rock workout, while "Violet Hill" boasts uncharacteristically amped-up guitars and crashing percussion. VIVA LA VIDA isn't Coldplay's most consistent offering, but it's still more unpredictable than past outings, and surprisingly intriguing

Love the album. It has a great feel to it - a real change for Coldplay as I haven't been a huge fan in the past. Influences are clearly of the Pink Floyd / Earlier Genesis style. Great listening.
The only downside is the cardboard sleeve on the "special edition". Always seems a bit cheap, and doesn't fit in the CD rack properly, but otherwise great

I'm not a really big Coldplay fan, but I thought that I might give it a try. It's quite a dramatic and symphonic album, lots of strings and catchy riffs. It's also quite a thought provoking album too, it's hard not to be able to relate to any of the words or emotions in the music. A great CD and thoroughly recommended.

Having heard Viva la Vida on the radio I found it hauntingly beautiful. Days
later I was still hearing it in my head and knew I had to buy it, I was not
disappointed this CD is a must have, a joy to listen to and to think I had never even heard of Cold Play before this. Brit Awards what were you thinking.

Viva La VidaLove the music on this Coldplay album and I'm nearly a pensioner so i'ts music for all ages. My favourite track is the titled one !!!viva la vida!!! which just stays with you al day and you can't stop singing it, just as well I'm on my own as my singing leaves a lot to be desired.

Cold start but gets warmerAlways been an avid Coldplay fan so looked forward to new album. First play is definately a slow burn and I only got into it after about 3 listens. Title track is definately the best and an instant Coldplay classic but more instrumental stuff on the rest which takes a bit of time to get into.

I marked 4 out of 5 as I'm really not into experimentalism. It must have been their producer who asked them to record in "a bakery, a nunnery, a magic shop, a church". That is cheap eccentricity from their producer. Teenagers might be impressed.
