CLOSED ON ACCOUNT OF RABIES is a Hall Willner-produced collection of artists reading from the works of Edgar Allan Poe.Includes liner notes by Charles Baudelaire and Hal Willner.Legendary producer Hal Willner has assembled a myriad of illustrious spoken-word albums throughout his career. Here, he pays tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, with help from an eclectic group of musicians and actors, who intone Poe's work over some appropriately creepy sonic backdrops. Sinister Guy character actor Christopher Walken reads "The Raven" against a background of eerie sounds including intermittent electric guitar licks. Ken Nordine, in his strange, subterranean voice, makes "The Conqueror Worm" utterly unforgettable; and Jeff Buckley, reading "Ulalume," comes across as both youthful and haunting. The spirit of Poe seems uniquely captured on CLOSED ON ACCOUNT OF RABIES (a reference to the recent theory of Poe's death being caused by a case of rabies, rather than alcohol poisoning), as exemplified by Marianne Faithfull's ethereal rendition of "Annabel Lee:"
