It was put together 18 months after filming had finished by Spielberg. The studio, Columbia, were in financial problems when the film was originally released and demanded the film was issued early for the Christmas market. This version comes as two discs. The second disc includes a fascinating documentary which covers casting, locations, special effects etc. It also includes an extended ending and one the Speilberg was not happy with as it showed the inside of the Mother Ship. John Williams explains why the music was so important to the film and the "little 3 year old boy" tells how he reacted to seeing a clown and a gorilla on the set.
