Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (DVD 2001)

This is the Collector's version of the film. It was put together 18 months after filming had finished by Spielberg. The studio, Columbia, were in financial problems when the film was originally released and demanded the film was issued early for the Christmas market.
This version comes as two discs. The second disc includes a fascinating documentary which covers casting, locations, special effects etc. It also includes an extended ending and one the Speilberg was not happy with as it showed the inside of the Mother Ship.
John Williams explains why the music was so important to the film and the "little 3 year old boy" tells how he reacted to seeing a clown and a gorilla on the set. And if you don't know what an Encounter of the First or Second kind is... watch the documentary!

should have been called close encounters of the out of this world kind because thats wot this film is.totaly amazing effects and the tune will haunt you for the rest of your life, must see film.

It is great sci fi film. I saw it for sale on e-bay and knew i had to have it. The theme music is addictive. Fantastic film. What better way to make a safe and secure purchase than through e-bay.

very good film. delves into the unknown and makes it seem like we're not the only ones out there! good storyline and though fairly old, the film is worth watching for a night of entertainment.

The year 1977 marked a turning point for science fiction in US cinema. Although the genre had long been dominated by C-grade schlock, the arrival of two blockbuster films changed all that -- George Lucas' 'Star Wars' and Steven Spielberg's 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.'
But while Lucas' nostalgic space opera was certainly the bigger hit at the time (and went on to become the most influential cinematic phenomenon of the late twentieth century), today Spielberg's more benevolent tale of first contact with extra-terrestrials is widely perceived as the superior film of the two. Indeed, thirty years later, while Lucas' original trilogy has suffered something of a backlash due to its poorly received prequels, 'Close Encounters' is now regarded as a genuine epic as influential, awe-inspiring and revolutionary as 'Metropolis,' '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Blade Runner.'
Finally, in 1997, Spielberg returned to his unfinished masterpiece for the third -- and presumably final -- time, creating what he now calls his definitive Director's Cut. Scenes were again added and reshaped and the extraneous "inside the mothership" climax excised. The result is easily the darkest and best version of the film (it's certainly my favorite), and with it, the book on 'Close Encounters' at last seems to be closed.
'Close Encounters' is still so etched in the popular consciousness that it's hard to believe that it's been thirty years since it first hit theaters. Although the film has been released in a myriad of different versions (all presented in full on this Blu-ray), whichever version you personally prefer, the film remains an uplifting experience that's an absolute landmark of the science fiction genre. This first-ever high-def release truly is the 'Ultimate Edition' -- I've never seen the film look or sound better, and the extras are a great mix of both new and old. Mr. Spielberg, I'm ecstatic that you've finally jumped into high-def with 'Close Encounters,' and I can't wait to see what's next.

If you haven't seen this where have you been for the last thirty years. Speilberg at his best, he will never equal this or the original raiders of the lost ark. You don't have to be a sci fi fan to like this, it has it all. even the special effects hold up well against the CGI marvels we watch today. The plot revolves around an electrical engineer who is moved by something but he does not know what.
All becomes plan as the movie progresses. You will just have to watch it and find out, have a hankie ready for the end.

A classic '70s feel good film. I bought this for my eleven year old to watch. Although she was a bit wary of the aliens theme at first she really enjoyed it. Nothing scary here but i kept that a secret until the end!

my little boy is into aliens at the moment and has been told this is a good film,purchased the film cheaper than a shop and delivered to door which is easier for me as i am unable to get to the shops sum times due to illness

Truely a masterpiece and used cutting edge technology in its day. Would love to have seen this on the silver screen but still looks awesome on my 40" LCD. A real feel good movie, fabulous musical score and story line.

Best viewing time.....every Sunday at about 2.00pm after a belly full of Sunday dinner, relax with a beer, feet up and enjoy...........

Was really pleased with this dvd.Havnt seen this film for a long time.Quality was very good as well.It was really good to have the extras dvd to see how this film was made and about the caracters in it.Also my children enjoyed this too with it been out quite a few years was a pleasure to watch.Good product looked brand new as though it hasnt been used.

This is a classic film that everyone should view or own. Up until recently I was unable to purchase this film in the shops.My husband is an avid sci-fi watcher in every sense of the word,he was overjoyed that we had been able to obtain one of his favourite movies,when you watch the film remember that you are not alone there is life out there.

hi, thort this dvd was the full film with all the deletd scenes on disc one
and in the film but not....... all the deleted parts are on disc two not part of the film.

Classic Spielberg, great story, great effects puts so many modern films to shame. If you like simple Sci-Fi you can not beat the this. One of those films you wish was based on a true story!

I'm a complete sci-fi addict and wanted to see this one again. Found it on E-Bay and won it Love it and I'll watch it again and again

the film is a real classic and we have been meaning to purchase a copy for our collection for ages. the film has stood the test of time and is as good today as it was 28 years ago

I personally think its one of the best movies of all time. Mystery and suspense, with a huge dollop of special effects thrown in for good measure. It takes me right back to my childhood, as it was one of the first proper movies I went to see as a child. I love it, love it, love it!

I bought it, as it was one of those movies I kept meaning to buy, but never quite got round to it. Suddenly, there it was on ebay, I had to have it!
