Vin Diesel Makes a classic gem of a Sci-fi film

I resisted buying the film for years - as I thought it was probably over - hyped. Besides, who is Riddick - sounded like a daft name. However, more fool me! Mind you, Vin Diesel is the Actor, and it sounds like a fuel-magnates ideal name. His smooth, unruffled calm very deep voice is perfectly in tune with the highly competant fighter of the character, not a huge man, but a powerhouse of fighting competance who seems not to enjoy his need to be violent, but menaces his evil opponents and gives them a chance to back out before a dynamic coup-de-gras ensues. There is a lot more to Riddick than meets the eye.
There is a plot, the hero not just a Rambo, but a reluctant hero with enough depth to be believable, an understated successful warrior past, who turns up trumps continually, fighting the Necromongers, a race of half-dead people who make the Nazis look like rank amateurs, intending to kill every last human being in the Universe, and our hero Riddick at first reluctantly, but then seriously intending to stop them. The Special Effects are top-class, the huge wide-angle army shots as good as Lord of the Rings, though shorter. The story and characters have enough flesh to seem real, though the half-dead soldiers are not zombie-types but take the concept to another level of complexity, being unwillingly pressed into service, and appearing living, though able to walk round with knives in thier backs quite comfortably, while being almost undefeatable. The physics is of another dimension altogether, and somehow, the evil Necromonger's spaceships are eco-friendly, seemingly powered by drawing in dark streams of cloud/pollution or dust, depending on your perception, and able to hover without blasts of rocket-power blowing everything under it to smithereens. Visually, a treat - the designers have unified the necromongers war machinery and armour, the massive statuary which outranks the Nazis and the Egyptians completely, though nodding to both, the huge sets with lots of detail, the smaller personal touches all the way through the film. The overexposed effects on the sunrising shots, where the temperature melts some of the rocks is impressively right mostly. As a newcomer to Riddick, I now want to straightway - well, at least, just after finishing this review, find more in the series, as the hero happily overcomes the arch-enemy, thus commanding the loyalty of the followers of the enemy - and leaves us wondering what will happen in the next film - very well worth a visit - I was not disappointed.
Plus, if you should be, you can always resell on ebay for what you paid for it. This is a new way to me of being in a Video Club. I seem to be able to buy a DVD, watch it, and resell it afterwards without it costing much at all. Cheaper than hiring, and no deadline to bring it back! - Ideal! Hope you enjoy the film - a tip to get rid of the unwanted waffle in a film that I like, by using Fab 5 Software to just copy the film only onto a blank DVD, and so cut out all the useless junk which clutters up the average DVD, and keep the original and the copy in a double-disk cover. It gives most films a 100% complete result on a single-layer DVD, AND allows you to use the copy and keep the original safe in case of damage to the working copy. I don't know if this is completely legal, but you have bought the original, and are not making a profit by reselling, so for me, this is an insurance against damage to the costly original at cost of a new case! Enjoy!
