This is a film where you can close your eyes and imagine !

Let this film take you away into a mythical world. a lovely film, a superb cast and extremely lavish.

I really enjoyed this. The 4 children were lovely and this brings back so many memories of when i read the book. I cannot wait for a sequel to be in front of me.

This isn't simply for children, I'm sure every adult would love this film !!!

This can be viewed again and again.

This wonderful movie gives us back the "special effects film" proper. Here's hoping it helps to wean younger viewers (and older ones who should know better) away from the "might-as-well-be-a-cartoon" overkill of the Matrix and other CGI-fests - even Jackson's Kong has, for me, one dinosaur-chase too many - and back to the mythopoeic splendours of true cinema artists like Ray Harryhausen. Setting aside the technical verisimilitude of 2001 and the zooming rockets of Star Wars, it's no coincidence that the previous benchmark for really special special effects was "Jason and the Argonauts"; bringing mythology to life - that is, putting real performers in the frame with mythical beasts - is the modern age's equivalent of Ovid and the rest doing it in narrative poetry. With Narnia, we finally get a worthy contemporary inheritor of those legacies, cinematic and literary.

Of course, one of the secrets of a great "special effects film" is that the wizardry is complemented by excellence in other areas. Narnia gives us, for a start, some genuinely good child actors (English ones, to boot!) for our protagonists. The young performers here manage to convey emotion and just the right level of anachronism to chime with the story's wartime setting, without resort to jarring Harry Potterish bum notes of trendiness (or that series' often wooden, school-play delivery of the juvenile dialogue). Georgie Henley in particular is absolutely pitch-perfect in her depiction of little Lucy's delight, terror, sadness, and, above all, innocent wonder - the perfect "Disney kid," in fact (and much, much better than that brand might imply).

The Narnia grown-ups are also fantastic, similar streaks ahead of the Potter adult rota: compare James Cosmo's brief and brilliant Father Christmas here with the Dumbledores of Harris and Gambon, for example. Better still, put Tilda Swinton's subtly terrifying White Witch against any of cinema's fear-queens and she's going to come out at the top. James McAvoy's faun is a touching demonstration of that actor's striking versatility.

Meanwhile, on the voice-over front, we have Ray Winstone's delightful Mister Beaver (paired with a Dawn French thankfully restrained from making this character "her own" (i.e. not funny)), a great, appropriate fox from Rupert Everett and many other fine vocalisations, culminating in a gloriously leonine sound-portrait of Aslan from Liam Neeson.

The story is already established as a modern classic; the screenplay is pretty faithful. Pacing, cinematography (a glorious colour palette is on view throughout) and music are all fine, too. But the breath is most taken, of course, by the beautifully-integrated effects. When I spoke of the voice-over performances just now, you have to see what amazing justice is done to the real actors by their animated counterparts (and vice-versa). Facial expressions, body-language, authentic animal behaviour and anthropomorphic adaptations are welded in magnificent style, convincing and entertaining at the same time. The wolves look as real as the centaurs; the demons are as alive as the cheetahs; the gryphon (the gryphon!) is somehow truer to "life" than, say, any of the Black Beauties we've seen filmed. The phoenix is astounding. In true Jason style, we also get a harpy, taunting Aslan on his way to his execution.

The masterpiece in this gallery of wonders, indeed, has to be Aslan; the lion is real; super-real; moving just for being so beautifully realised !!

  Chronicles Of Narnia

In this lavish big screen adaptation of the C.S. Lewis tale, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are sent to live with the reclusive Professor Kirke (Jim Broadbent) in his mysterious country home during World War 2. Lucy soon discovers a wardrobe that hides a doorway into the magical world of Narnia. Narnia was once a peaceful land of talking beasts, dwarfs, giants, and fauns. But an evil spell is cast on Narnia and it is now ruled by the White Witch (Tilda Swinton), who has transformed it into a frozen place, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. To the creatures of Narnia, the children now represent hope. Led by the powerful lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), the children must defeat the White Witch and free all of Narnia from her icy spell...

Amazing film with alot of potential for a great day with the family 100% great film

Was really looking forward to the first of Chronicles of Narnia films and it certainly did not disappoint. Much more geared towards a younger audience than the films it is compared to (Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter), but it can still appeal to both young and old. Fantastic CGI with Aslan and the other creatures and beautiful acting from the 4 young children. Particular favourites were the beavers voiced by Ray Winstone and Dawn French!

A Must See Film For All Ages

This is a must see film for all ages, with excellent special effects and scary moments and a little sad in places. I have not just watched the film once but many times over and even bought the PS2 game LOL.

My daughter is 6 years old and was fascinated by the talking animals which looked very realistic.

This is an ideal film for the family to sit and watch together.

i love this film , i have seen it once befor but years ago but it wasnt as good. the special effects are amazing , the mythical creatures look so real and the lion what a look alike to real wild lion of africa. its sad ,exciting and give you a self belief you are in narnia yourself. i decided to buy this dvd as i have always liked the special effects of this type of film includeing many others like it, you get a sense realism believe in a film like this ,not like the normal animated stuff in which the charactors are cartoonist and dont look like the charictor that they are supose to be, even though some of the animated film are good , you can beat the computer tech responsible for makeing a knock out film like this, its great i would recomend it to any one who believes in bringing computer tech to life , and makeing films of this type so real.GREAT FOR ALL THE FAMILY I GIVE THIS FILM AND OTHER LIKE IT 10/10

  REALLY REALLY GOOD

Any one who loves this book should not be disappointed with this film adaptation. Disney have made their best film in a long time. Films never ever come near to truly capturing the full essence of a much-loved classic, but this one does manage to do get as close as a film is likely to get. Disney were taking a huge risk here as most of their audience will be adults who loved this story as a child and still carry that love into adult-hood, and would not be willing to give acclaim if not truly justified. Aslan is superb, you'll be convinced that he is real. His death is well portrayed although nowhere near as cruel as in the book, probably to save the youngsters in the audience from bawling their eyes out, although it didnt save all the adults from shedding a tear (myself and a friend included). Opening scenes are very dark and dingy (air raids and black-out curtains), but once into Narnia the scenes are beautiful. Should not be compared to LOTR or HP&TGOF, this film is different in a sense that you can truly believe in it. The White Witch was well portrayed, she was suitably evil and cold in the battle scene, but the true winner in this film was Mr Tumnus, he couldn't possibly have been depicted in a better way. The scenes between him and Lucy are special - probably the best acted in the film. Lucy is great, and Edmund was ok, but Peter and Susan were terribly wooden and didnt manage to carry the characters well. Watch out for Philip - his couple of one-liners will give you a laugh

  Needs more girl power!
Review created: 04/09/06

Eh. That's about sums it up.

The first half of the movie I really really enjoyed. I felt they captured the mood of the children, the professor's house, and the magic of entering Narnia for the first few times beautifully.

The second half, however, felt like a cheap Lord Of The Rings ripoff. Like someone saw LoTR, but felt it was too violent and grown-up, so they took sanitized it and re-wrote it a bit to make it more suitable for kids. It almost had me bored in places.

I read all the Narnia books as a little kid, and LOVED them. After I first read The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, I went through our whole house, testing every wardrobe to see if there happened to be a magic land behind it. I even remember doing it at my aunt's house (I think I was around...9 or so?). All of it seemed so magical and beautiful and interesting to me, and the first half of the movie really did the books justice as I remember them.

I just wish the second half wouldn't have felt so cheap after being used to the magnificence of Lord Of The Rings.

Also - the two girl characters annoyed me a little. I know I read this in a review when it was just in cinemas, but I so agree with it: I am part of the Buffy-generation, and I expect the girl characters to be just as much kick-ass as the boys. I really did not like how the girls sat around and watched and cried while the main good guy was being tied up and under threat of death. They didn't even try to rescue him or anything - they just sat there and cried! And the older girl had a bow and arrow, for god's sakes! I realize Buffy (and similar shows/movies with strong female characters) probably spoiled me, and that things were way different in C. S. Lewis's time....but I wish they'd been a little bit more proactive instead of sit and cry. Pft!

  Utterly enchanting
Review created: 30/08/06
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Utterly enchanting and brilliant version of CS Lewis' book where four sibling children, evacuated to a sinister country mansion during the Blitz, are transported to the magical land of Narnia through the back of a wardrobe. Despite a major indiscretion by the younger brother, they are eventually greeted as heroes, who under the leadership of the lion Aslan, lead the climactic battle against the evil witch and her followers. Humans, centaurs and real-looking animals with computer-generated movements fight side-by-side for good against evil in this incredible spectacle. Good wins, evil is banished and the four siblings live on as leaders in Narnia. The film ends with them as adults stumbling across some undergrowth leading to a long forgotten wardrobe door...

The Chronicles Of Narnia is a magical spectacle with superb effects and excellent performances by the four young leads. In my opinion you can forget the violent Lord Of The Rings and excellent, but predictable Harry Potter - the Chronicles Of Narnia is poised to become the ultimate serial blockbuster. Lets hope the sequel lives up to The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. A wonderful film.

The sound of a bored child is an unequalled one; a sound which can drive many to insanity. So what can one do with a barbarian of such a nature? Buy them a DVD of course! And what better way to spend your hard earned money than purchase one with a lion and a witch, that live in a wardrobe!! And they all said I was mad when I suggested making a movie about how the war was really about saving the people of Iraq. Anyway back to the movie. It's been quite a hit at the box office so why would you need my review. It's pretty good but who cares about me, the intention behind my purchase was my little cousin who thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. She adores the film watching it at every interval of free time she has. Her parents even had to install 15" monitors on the toilet door (not really I just made that up). But she does love the film as does the majority of the household. The length is just about right, plenty of action and adventure make for a robust film. At the tender age of 19 I wouldn't remember but many have told me that seein a book they read as youths being turned into a movie is pretty intense. Myself however, I didn't really like it. The good rating above is a reflection of how my dislike is the minority in the household. I'm all for new actors but the acting was of a low standard to be fair and a celebrity or two wouldn't have gone amiss. The story is pretty straightforward a few twists and turns would have livened it up and the ending seemed like the producer had run out of time and needed to think of something quick so the film could meet the release date. Other than that it's okay(ish). Not a great review I suppose, if you are still reading this and are slightly confused let me summarise; get it for the kids they'll probably love it. Any editors out there who like me please don't hesitate to give me a call I'm sure I could incorporate a meeting in my schedule. To everyone else and their mum, peace and love are the key, do not pick leaves off the trees in the month of may (I just made that up), xTx

This film is really visually stunning, follows the book well enough and the actors are mostly children and do a really brilliant job. This is well worth a watch as a family film. My kids were mesmerised by it, Aslan is done beautifully, I wanted to reach out and stroke him myself. Pure pleasure for the visuals alone, memorable and enjoyable.
