Album Notes
Personnel include: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Dizzy Gilespie (trumpet, piano); Dodo Marmarosa (piano); Red Callender (upright bass); Cozy Cole (drums).Aside from the sound quality of his recordings, Charlie Parker's music doesn't date. As fresh, exhilarating, and innovative today as at the time it was recorded, Parker's blazing bop inventions consistently dazzle and please like the work of few other artists. This Living Era anthology, entitled ORNITHOLOGY, collects 24 original mono recordings made between 1945 and 1951, Parker's peak years.Parker's best-known tunes-- "Now's the Time," "Moose the Mooche," "A Night in Tunisia," and "Ornithology," among them--are here, as is the famously dissolute and pain-filled 1946 Dial recording of "Lover Man." Given that nearly every cut here is a certified jazz classic, and that Parker is at the top of his craft throughout, it's really hard to go wrong. Additionally, the tracks feature a who's who of bop luminaries backing Parker, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Erroll Garner, Bud Powell, and Max Roach. This is essential stuff.
