Includes liner notes by Jim Ohlschmidt and John Burk.Digitally remastered by George Horn. The late Charlie Byrd deserves a place in jazz history if only for two things: he brought the nylon-string acoustic guitar into the jazz mainstream, and he helped introduce the Brazilian sound into jazz (and pop). Byrd's use of classical guitar technique in swing and bebop established a style that was sublimely tasteful, warmly rhythmic, and mellow without being bland. THE BEST OF THE CONCORD YEARS is just that--a wonderful cross-section of Charlie Byrd's artistry in a variety of contexts, covering the years 1979-2000. Disc One is devoted to jazz standards: some genial yet heartfelt Ellington treatments ("Cottontail," "Solitude"), some romantic mood music ("Soft Lights & Sweet Music") and a tip of the hat to another master guitarist ("Django"). Disc Two focuses on the Brazilian sounds of samba and bossa nova ("Desafinado," "Dindi") and Brazilian-ized standards ("Besame Mucho"). Throughout, Byrd plays with subtle, muted fervor and gentle swing. In addition, CONCORD YEARS features contributions from such luminaries as Scott Hamilton, Bud Shank, Michael Moore, and Joe Wilder.
