Daniel Craig is a tough two-fisted Bond in the first proper movie version of Ian Fleming's first novel, "Casino Royale." The action is potent and punchy, and the performances very solid. Fans of the book will love the little details (like the man with the eye patch) and the adherence to much of Fleming's 53-year-old dialogue. Craig is an energetic addition to the series, a "human" Bond who you want to root for--not the snide tourist of Roger Moore or the suave pitchman of Pierce Brosnan. Eva Green plays a complex character as Vesper Lynd--when she shows up in the black velvet dress (straight out of the book, like much of this movie) I felt like cheering. Mads Mikkelsen is an appropriately creepy Le Chiffre, with an effeminate quality that is also based very closely on Fleming. He is a vicious sadist, a coward, and a weakling--not the usual egomaniacal industrialist surrounded by thugs in color-coordinated jumpsuits. "Casino Royale" has a great, completely original title sequence, a tough muscular score by series regular David Arnold. and a strong theme song from Soundgarden/Audioslave front-man Chris Cornell.
The film is just what the series needed.
