I bought it because, despite the film being a classic, I had never been able to see it through! There was always some reason that I was interrupted or called away. On May 25th I became 65 and retired. Nobody will call me away and nobody will interrupt my viewing and I am going to sit and enjoy like millions before me.

Casablanca - easy to enter, much harder to leave, especially if your name is on the top of the Nazis' most wanted list. This sets the scene for this brilliant 'film noir'. Humphrey Bogart plays broken-hearted Rick Blaine, sometime gun-runner, sometime fascist killer, present owner of a bar, wallowing in self-pity after a love affair ended in Paris just as the Germans moved in.
Guess who turns up? His ex-lover (Ingrid Bergman) from Paris with her husband, oh dear, what does Rick do now, especially as she wants some travel documents that he has.
'As time goes by' Casablanca just gets better and better. In the immortal words of Humphrey Bogart "Play it again, Sam".

Great film.Ibought this item because friends of ours were having a murder mystery evening based on Vichy French Morocco and had never seen the classic love story Casablanca.So to give them a feel for that era i bought them the DVD.All the characters in the murder mystery closely follow the plot line of the film.all the best.Marcus.

The film was exactly as I remebered it. There is nothing better than a classic black and white film. I bought the film to project for a Casablanca theme party and everyone loved it. Lots of them had never even seen the film. What a brilliant buy! Will be keeping it for years to come.

The film is poignant - I have an affinity with Morocco, having maintained contact and visited my ex-husbands family there over the past 20 years. If the truths known I probably married my ex-husband for the culture, not for love.......Then in 2004 toured Morocco with my late husband prior to his death - he was also taken with the culture.
Just recently i took my best friend to Marrakech for a short stay, it was her dream to visit Casablanca - she watched the film several times with her father priorto his death. Being familiar with Casablanca, the language and culture, and having visited the infamous Ricks' Cafe (Humphry Bogart and Ingrid Bergman)
i promised to take her - we leave on 12th July. I bought this DVD for her birthday June 6th knowing it will stir her emotions and instigate a memorable holiday.
The DVD is in excellent condition, reasonably priced, clean and obviously from a smoke free, pet free environment. The description of the goods was exact and precise, leaving no question unanswered. I was happy to give this as a gift despite being second-hand was in perfect condition. Delivery was prompt.
In comparison to other products i have bought it was contrary to piracy, was not over-rated nor over-priced. I would be happy to purchase further articles from this supplier

The geo-political background of this marvellous film, a film which transcends its WW2 propaganda efforts, is still not known to many: after the fall of France in 1940, most of France (except Paris and North and the coastal regions) was, in fact, at least until 1942-43, run by a virtually independent pro-German French administration based in the spa town of Vichy. The overseas colonies of France, from Devil's Island to Indo-China, were ideologically split: some supported Vichy, some de Gaulle's London-based "government", others a mid-way position based around local high-ranking French commanders (French Morocco and Algeria, to name but two).
Casablanca, a port in Morocco, played a quasi-independent game, allied to Vichy but full of all sorts of people, including people in the administration and police, until the Americans and British invaded "by invitation" in 1943 (Operation Torch). This film is set somewhat beforehand, although actually made a little later.
Many propaganda points in the film will not be picked up on by most viewers, as in the scene where the obnoxious Deutsche Bank exec fails to gain entrance to Rick's casino room and storms off saying he will "report it to Der Angriff". how many know that to have been Goebbels' newspaper?

One of the all time classic movies, Casablanca was a film I had kept meaning to watch for a long time, in a bid to rectify my lousy film knowledge. I was suprising very taken with this film, as I find many "classics" are not as good as they are made out to be- a great film that can be enjoyed numerous times.

CasablancaThe film is set in wartime Morrocco and shows the tensions that occur between invading forces ( Germans ), the resident police ( French ) and the businessman ( American ). Rick ( American ) is a not too nice person who owns a nighclub. His life is turned upside down when the beautiful ex-girlfried of his turns up with her husban. The husband is a freedom fighter who is wanted by the Nazis. The acting is superb, the ending is perfect and in between there are delightful cameos from Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lawrie. This film really should not be missed if only for the piamo music. At no time can you here the words 'Play it again Sam' Check it out.

Casablanca, Cinema at its very bestRemember 1942 as this is when movie making peaked, Casablanca is the finest and greatest movie of all time.
There have been exceptional movies, great movies, emotional movies and superb effect movies but nothing comes any way close to Casablanca to watch this is to experience movie heaven.
It features some of the greatest performances and certainly the greatest script of all time, it leaves you wanting more you can never watch this movie too many times in fact it demands repeat viewing like no other movie

Why do we love this hammy old classic so? Taken on it's individual merits there doesn't seem to be much to recommend it... 'rushed production on a limited budget' blares out of every crack in the film. An unconvincing plot, predominantly moderate camera-work, lack-lustre sets and ridiculous model work... the aeroplane seems to be the first jump-jet... should set it firmly in the 'B' movie category for all time. The much of the main-line acting between the big sceens is rushed and perfunctory. Many characters, like 'baddie' Conrad Veidt, are sadly one-dimensional and, whilst the patently hurried script is scattered with pearls, most players, especially Claude Rains and Bogey, hurry their lines so much that one suspects the tax-man is on the way to the studio with their mothers-in-law.
So why can I not even dream of giving it less than a 5/5 rating, and why is my collection incomplete without it? I didn't see Casablanca until I was forty; now I'm 47 and I've probably seen it 30 times. Well, both Bogey and Bergman create wonderful characters, and the cameraman recovers his art sufficiently on the Bergman close-ups to make the lady an ethereal beauty for all time. The host of dubious and ambiguous characters played by Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and 'Cuddles' Sakall give a wonderful evocation of sleaze. The script teems with little gems of the English tongue and corruptions thereof, and approaches 'Hamlet' in terms of phrases which have entered common usage. The director has moments of brilliance, such as the emotional and evocative scene where 'The Marseillaise' drowns-out 'Die Wacht Am Rhein'. Taken as a whole, the film immeasurably outweighs the sum of its parts to enter the movie hall of fame.
