Album Notes
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "One Day At A Time" and "Philadelphia Freedom" did not appear on the original version of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY.Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, electric piano, harpsichord, Clavinet, Mellotron, Arp String Ensemble Synthesizer); Davey Johnstone (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, piano, background vocals); Dave Hentschel (Arp synthesizer); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals); Ray Cooper (congas, bongos, tambourine, gong, shaker, jawbone, cymbal, bells, belltree, triangle); John Lennon.Recorded at Caribou Ranch, Colorado from June to July, 1974. Includes liner notes by John Tobler.Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). In the pre-punk era, where severely inflated egos and ludricous concept albums were de rigeur, Elton John and Bernie Taupin's account of their rise from struggling penury to the peak of superstardom is one of rock's better attempts at self-mythology. The original vinyl record was an elaborate package in itself, and the music within is on a suitably grandiose and self-indulgent scale. At times, John's music and Taupin's lyrics struggle to gel, but when they come together on tracks such as 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' and 'Gotta Get A Meal Ticket', John carries the concept with suitable aplomb.

Captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy is an outstanding album along the lines of Goodbye yellow brick road which is my personal favourite Elton John album. This is a close second though with great tracks throughout including the excellent single Someone saved my life tonight. Also included as bonus tracks are the singles Philidelphia freedom and Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Excellent value!

  Eltons Finest?
Review created: 31/08/08

One of the defining albums of the 70's, that more than 30 years later still sounds as good. Probably, though others may disagree, the best album that Elton ever made and he has made some great albums!
Aside from the title track, my favourite track is Someone Saved My Life Tonight, which just typifies the the genre of the 70's.
If you do not own an Elton album (is there anyone out there who does not), then buy this...it will not disappoint.

Quality Elton John++Should be gold plated and archived for future generations++His back catalogue should become compulsory subject matter for all curriculums as part of our national herritage in order to re-educate the youth of today to appreciate quality music and divert their interest from the mundane S**Te that all of our current youth are served up and conditioned into believing is good eg High School Musical

Taupin and John at their best

There have been some fine albums put out by the partnership, but this, with its unusual mix of crowd pleasers like Someone Saved My Life and experimental Better Off Dead and Curtains makes for a really rounded album. He wasn't pleased with it, but it remains among my favourites
