  Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM

This is the bigger brother of the 24-85mm and 28-105mm lenses. That gains image stabilisation. It uses a 72mm filter size that is unusual on a Canon lens.

It has fast Ring-USM that offers fast focussing, and full time manual override (you can manually tweak the focus without switch in manual mode, and this will not strain the focus motor). The IS works well, and makes this a very versatile lens.

On a crop body (smaller that 35mm sensor, ie the 300D,350D,400D, or the 10D,20D etc), this isn't very wide angle (28mm is the FOV equivalent to a 45mm) but the 135mm end is very handy.

Quality wise it's probably 75% as good as the 24-105mm L, but this non-L lens is around have the price, and significantly smaller and lighter.

Summary: Handy size and weight, good range of focal length, although not very wide on a crop body. Good value for money, only really bettered by the L lenses at around twice the price.

Got the 28-135mm lens today, very happy with it produce better image quality than my previous 17-85mm IS, especially at 135mm side not far behind my 70-200 F4L.The IS function is very useful as well, you really need it if don't like carry a tripod. And it's a beautiful designed lens, dose looks very professional on my 30D and 5D, but the built quality isn't as good as Canon L series, the focusing ring isn't as smooth, it dosn't have the price tag either. Unless you are really really picky on the image quality, or have that much more money want to spend for the 24-105L IS, the EF 28-135MM IS USM would be the best Choice at this focal range, and as the EF lens, 28-135mm can also work on the full frame body like 5D, thats the big advantage over the EFS lenses like 17-85mm IS. Overall it's a great lens, great price, worth every penny.

  Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6
Review created: 17/07/09

This is a great lens which I purchased to complement a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and a 17-40 f4L and bridge a small gap to a 70-200 F2.8L whilst giving me a cheaper walk-around lens that has some versatility.

Given that all my other lenses are razor sharp I expected this one to perform relatively poorly but I was surprised.

The lens is plenty sharp enough there is some slight softness at edges wider open but its a pretty even picture at 70 to 135. The image stabiliser works surprisingly well, perhaps too well, but there is a temptation to use very low shutter speeds when you don't need too.

It produces better pics on a tripod with IS turned off.

At F5.6 it is at its sharpest and tends to be sharper at the wider end.

Its a good walk around lens and renders nice contrasty well saturated colours, there is slight barrel distortion wide open but its ok and sorts itself out very quickly by 35mm.

It does need a hood fitted at the wide end.

I would say its better than the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM but not as good as a 24-105 f4L but these are twice the price and on a small sensor body this lens is great.

In summary this is a good all round performer with no particular strengths or weaknesses its the Mondeo Ghia of the lens world and for most people other than serious professionals with huge sensors its plenty good enough. It is very good value for money and comes with my reccomendation.

Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM Lens

The lens has great versatility and will cover most of requirements for general landscape and portraits. It is equiped with USM for fast silent focusing with manual overide. The Image Stabilizer is great and because its built into the lens, the result is viewable before you shoot. A lens hood is a must to avoid incorrect metering and lens flare, but apart from this the only fault is that if you carry the camera by its shoulder strap, facing down, the lens zoom will drop under its own weight, requiring adjustment before shooting again. 8 out of 10.

This lens is the perfect step up from the kit lens that comes with the canon DSLRs, it has fast silent focusing and the Stabilizer is great. Also 28-135mm is perfect for all round use and means it stays on your camera 95% of the time. If you are starting to take photography further and don't want to spend £700 on L glass this is the lens for you.

Top notch lens image quailty is 9/10 build is 9/10 IS, Image Stablizer is the best part of lens you will get many more keepers handheld than ever before. Nice range 28-135mm and saves a lot of lens changing, ideal walkabout lens. A decent upgrade from and non USM/IS lens kit lens.

  Fantastic all purpose lens
Review created: 02/06/08

I bought this lens to replace the standard 18-55mm lens supplied with my cannon eos 400d, as a multi purpose "walkaround" lens its fantastic. I use the lens for family and holiday shots, the quality and colours etc are far superior to the standard lens. The close up/macro shots are superb and the zoom isn't bad either, although i would recommend a separate lens for this purpose. I'm not the most steady of photographers and the built in image stabilizer function of this lens has made all my pictures look great. I would personally recommend this lens to anybody, its brilliant!

  MID RANGE Canon Telephoto Lens
Review created: 24/05/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An excellent mid range telephoto lens, the Image stabalisation enables you to get phgotos in low light that would not have been possible without it. I have 2 of these 1 on a Canon 350D and the other on the 450D and they give excellent results.

I bought because I was getting shaky, the images I produce are far better and superb when coupled with a sturdy Tripod, fantastic thanks for IS, pity I have to use a Tripod but a mono pod in some cases will suffice.

  EF 28-135mm review
Review created: 09/09/09

Camera originally came with a signa lens that was OK but slow and noisy to focus with limited zoom. the 135 with the cropping of the EOS10D makes the longest zoom too long for me so the IS was essential.

First results from a two week holiday try out indicate a really good lens. Fast and accurate focusing and the USM is whisper quiet - its sometimes difficult to know if its worked! IS works brilliantly as well but i did take to turning it off to preserve a bit of battery power. Not too heavy and pretty compact.

Recommended.

  Good walkaround lens
Review created: 08/08/09
by:

Got this lens after reading reviews on ebay and amazon. I needed a walkaround lens with a little bit more than my kit lens. (I use a Canon 450D camera). I find the pictures quite sharp. Even on ISO 800 in dark lighting (basically) I was able to take shots of people handheld. Though I had to use software to reduce hte noise. The lens focuses quite well and quickly. A word of caution on cropped sensor cameras (e.g. canon 450D), the lens will not act as a wide-angle lens (though not much), which means for some shots i still require a more wide-angle lens. As another reviewer has mentioned it requires a 72mm polariser/uv etc. This means I will need to spend more as none of my previous ones fit. Hence four stars.

No probelms with the shots. Some softening of edges, but it is definitely a lens that is good value for money.

A step up from the 17-85mm
Review created: 29/07/09
by:

I bought this lens to replace the Canon 17-85mm lens that came with my 40D and I am very pleased with the results (over 200 images shot; indoors and outside in varying lighting conditions).

Good points:
1: Improved image quality compared to the Canon 18-55 and 17-85 lenses.

2: the lens allows a lot more light in than the 17-85 - especially noticeable indoors.

3: Zoom capability is much longer than the 17-85 (stating the obvious perhaps...)

4: Image Stabilisation delivers clear hand-held shots.

Bad (probably the wrong word) points:
1: Minimum Focal Length of 28mm on the 40D doesn't give a very wide field of view. I now also carry my kit 18-55 just in case which I didn't need to do when using the 17-85 (although I have rarely swapped them over).

2: Barrel does tend to extend when pointing down.

That's it. Overall, in my opinion, a very good lens and a step-up from the 17-85. Remember to use a good-quality filter to protect it (it's not cheap!)
Now to save up for the 17-40mm L...

Great lens ideal for most scenarios.
Touch noisy while focusing but doesn't put you off.
Would recommend to anyone thinking of an addition to their existing standard 18-55mm lens.

Bought to replace a stolen one I was pleased to be reminded of how good this lens is - certainly at the price! Have read a couple of rather disparaging professional reviews but far more in praise and I've aways been impressed by quality of pictures taken with it. My favourite lens!
