Canon PowerShot S500 / IXUS 500 Digital Camera

I like it's ability to take quality photos in all conditions, light, dark, close up or distant. It is simple to use even for me who have had little experience in digital photography. It also came witha spare battery and a large memory card as well as the standard one. It is almost like brand new complete with box, instructions and connections.
I am highly delighted with the purchase which went very smoothly with the buyer who kept me up to full communication as to progress of despatch etc.

Very compact and easy to carry around, Takes great pictures on the auto settings, and is reasonably easy to use, although some of the manual settings are a bit fiddly, and the small LCD not very clear in bright light,otherwise i would rate it excellent.
The Compact Flash card that comes with camera has not much capacity, So you
will need a larger one, But try and get a Genuine Canon item,as some of the
cheaper ones do not work so well

I'm a professional photographer - so am pretty critical about cameras - even compacts. I've had a Canon 400, 430 and now 2x 500's. They are an excellent range of cameras. They have their faults, they do seem to die after a few years. However, I don't see this as a negative, they are so cheap second hand they are well worth the money. The 500 is a 5Mp camera - easily enough for anything you want to shoot - will easily print upto A3 size with the right printer and know how. Canon's quality is superb. Great lens, pictures are always well balanced and colour is very good. Size of camera is excellent, small enough and light enough to carry around in a pocket. Screen on back is small - but adequate. Bigger would be nice, but not essential. At around £50 for this camera- they are a bargain. I nearly bought a newer version at £120 - but couldn't see the point. The new one's have too many pixels for their needs and don't offer anything better apart from a larger viewing screen

It's very easy to use and get good results. More modern versions have more mb but for almost all photos 5mb is more than enough. Why pay more?

This was Canon best camera when it came out. Its small compact and does take wonderful pictures. Its not heavy or bulky in your pockets. The body feels good to handle and I love the simplicity of design. It has Compact flash card which is the reason I bought this camera. Later models use SD cards etc.It sold for a great price for me to enjoy. I have other professional DSLRs like Nikon, Canon, Fuji S2, s3 Pro, Sony and its handy to have a small compact like the Canon Ixus 500 for other candid shots.I also have a Canon Ixus 430 which shares the same Li lon batteries.The Canon Ixus 430 saw plenty action in Seoul Korea and Macau around Christmas 2008 capturing as I walk the streets and alleyways.Most of the professional DSLRS use the compact flash memory cards and having all cameras using the same card helps to save costs and allow me to enjoy my photography. All I want to have is a point and shoot without having to lug around a DSLR all day. The most important thing about taking pictures is to have them taken as it happen and not regretting not having a camera handy.Any compact can fill this role but I choose the Canon Ixus 500 as the camera I will have with me 24/7.

I love how Compact it is,it easily fits in my Wife's Handbag,it takes lovely photographs and is so handy.
There is absolutely nothing that I dislike about it,it's exactly what I wanted.
I actually bought it for my Wife,our other camera is sometimes too big,and this compact design is an ideal replacement.

After my tree year old had written of two video cameras and my ixus 460 camera i decided to buy a replacement canon ixus on e bay. Am delighted with the ixus 500 which I bought . Its like new and i really like the conveience of popping the compact flash card into my pc to quickly review and print pictures.

It is a quality camera, a bit dated now as it is only 5 mp but it still produces good pictures. It does however have a fault common to cameras, not onlt Canon which is the lcd chip, it has a tendancy to turn purple and loose the image on occasions. Mine is at the stage where switching off and on corrects this problem, if it ends up as a permanent fault then apperently Canon will fix it free of charge....but I don't know if there is a time limit.

the reason i bought this particular model as it has an optical viewfinder as some compact digital cameras LCD screens are bad to detect in brightr sunlightdis appointment is 3 weeks after purchase the flap that holds memory card plastic pin broke & needs taped up for camera to function

My wife and I have had one each of these for some years, and they have performed wonderfully.
Their only flaw appears to be the Sensor, which was made by Sony I think, and when it packs up the screen either has lines on it, or is purple or has wrong colour casts.
The good news is, you can get it replaced by a Authorised Canon dealer for no cost at all, as it is a known fault with this camera,(and quite a few other cameras too, whose sensors came from the same supplier).
Cosidering it was an "over-priced" camera when it first came out,(@ c.£260),good quality ones are currently available on eBay for between 60 and £80 complete with a decent size Compact Flash card.
If you still like the idea of a viewfinder rather than the current screens, and you want a robust and well-made digital camera, this is an excellent purchase.
