Canon is Canon. It takes at least couple of days to learn all and after that you will be able to take really nice pictures.
Just the processor should be bit bigger.
But this is very very nice COMPACT camera.Excellent for year 2007.
Any questions,send me e-mail.

Go Canon Go! Great Cameras - S5 iS model
Review created: 07/09/08(updated 07/09/08)
by:

Just bought the Canon PowerShot S5 iS Digital Camera. How glad am I! Have just returned from holiday in Menorca and got some great shots. The camera is quite easy to use, there are many functions and exposure types to choose from and the 'Movie' mode is very easy to select, even when the camera is set to photo Auto mode, just press the seperate Video Button and away you go! The quality is really good for video and excellent for photos. That's why I again for the 4th time chose Canon, the lens quality is excellent and there is a wide selection of functions to choose from for different shooting modes. It has 12x Optical and 4x Digtal Zoom, Stereo Sound, Auto Face Detect, Image Stabilizer, 8 MegaPixel, Flash Hot-Shoe, TTL View Finder, Flip-Out & Rotate 6.5cm LCD Screen, PictBridge, Self Timer, Macro Feature, Auto Picture Rotate and Pop-Up Flash etc...
I couldn't be more happy with this purchase, even the Slide Show feature allows the playback throught your T.V. is so easy and gives various options for slide change. It uses a SD Card and runs on 4 x AA (LR6) Batteries which seemed to last quite well even when using the screen for viewing/playback. the video quality is suprisingly very good even though it's only 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per sec;
The zoom is quick and quiet and the Autofocus is pretty responsive even in low light.
The only downside I found so far is the camera is slightly on the bulky side, but bearing in mind all the features (too many to list), I think it is a minor problem. Overall, the camera looks and feels solid and worth every penny! I paid £217 (plus free extras) and couldn't find it anywhere else for less than £250.
If you are seeking an expensive looking quality camera packed with features @ a good price, try this one and you wont be disappointed.
Happy shooting...

Canon is Canon.
Having owned the S3IS for 3 years, I was loking for something that did the same, but better for present. The S5IS is it!
The Canon S5iS is one of the best 'point and shoot' cameras that I have ever had the pleasure of owning! Its 8.0 megapixels is fantastic for image quality and the 12x optical zoom gets 'right in there!'. It is very ergonomically designed and all features are fairly intuitive! Big pluss displey can turn with face to photo object.easy to make photos ir places hard to get(f.ex. after car crash you must photo details what is narrow places where you can't see in display, then you turn display in position you need.Excellent photos, easy menu, very good for starters, batteries last for a long time, easy to use

I am new to this kind of Digital Prosumer camera, so I am still learning much about it. I find that I hate the fact that I have to get on the computer to consult the Advance Manual every time I have a problem. I would much prefer a manual in book form. I like the 12 x optical zoom. That was what attracted me to this camera, along with all the other features, such as anti-shake and face recognition. I do think that the thing that really swung it for me though was the macro and super macro modes, as I love taking pictures of insects and flowers in close up. It is an excellent camera. Compared to my previous camera which was a Vivitar 6 mega pixels and 4 times optical zoom, there simply is no comparison. The pictures have such clarity and the colours when using the SCN mode are vibrant. I take a lot of pictures of sunrises and sunsets. The results are amazing. No previous camera of mine comes close to it. Really pleased with its performance so far. The video mode is so so easy to use. I am well pleased!

Canon PS S5 IS is a good digital camera
Review created: 02/08/08

It has a lot's of functions, I would say the camera is between Excellent and Average. The body of the camera is very handy, makes it easier for the user. The LCD screen is very useful in some situations also. It needs some skills to use all it's functions so I recommend it to somebody who want to learn and switch later on to SLR.

  Canon S5IS
Review created: 31/07/08

Having owned the S1IS for 3 years, I was loking for something that did the same, but better. The S5IS is it!
Faster focusing, 12x zoom (equivalent to 400mm plus on an SLR), 8M resolution (although the 3.2M of the S1 is adequate for A4 prints at arms length because of the lens quality), and a stabilisation system that means i can hand hold 1/2 second exposures.
I don't need all the scene modes, but use it like a traditional 35mm film SLR in a smaller package. I looked at Lumix and Olympus (had an early one with 10x zoom), but the option of CHDK as an operating system swung it for me.
For the serious photographer on a budget or trying to avoid a back injury from carrying too much kit, it is a bargain!

Canon PowerShot® S5 IS Digital Camera
Review created: 31/07/08

I owned a Canon PowerShot® S5 IS Digital Camera in the past and made the mistake of selling it - I missed it so much I bought another.

To my mind it’s the best of the bunch of the compact digital bridge cameras. It does not have all the frills and features of the Fuji S100FS (which I have also owned), but then again it’s about a third of the size and weight and the batteries last four times as long. Nor does it have the x18 zoom of the Limux FZ18 (again I have owned on), but the x12 zoom is usable throughout its range and the dynamic range is superior and unlike the FZ18 it has a solid, robust feel.

The Electronic View Finder is as good as the best of them and the twist and tilt LCD is a real bonus, if like me you're getting to old to lie down on the ground to take low level shots you will really appreciate it.

Most importantly of course it takes good photographs, the 8MP sensor is average by modern standards but it’s physically larger than most and this results in good dynamic range.

If I had to find a fault then it would be then lens cap - despite the fact that this is the 5th model in the series, the lens cap design which on the S2 could be described as truly dreadful and prone to falling off, the S5 version is merely adequate and still has a tendency to “pop off” If you want a more secure lens cap and/or the ability to use filters, then cheap adapter tubes (which also protect the zoom travel), with protective filter and snappy lens cap can be had on Ebay for around £10 – well worth it in my view.

Amazing quality Canon powershot S5 IS

This camera is so easy to use yet the quality images and hi spec is in my opinion Fantastic, as someone who loves taking photo's of nature/wildlife/scenery This camera is just a step away from DSLR's which is still out of my price range but with this product i am not in the same hurry to have one. i would recommend this to anyone who is looking to upgrade but can not afford the DSLR, until this camera i have been using a Konica Minolta Dimage Z2, again a great camera but this powershot just has far more features and benefits and sits real nice in the hand and with the moveable pull out viewing screen is faultless, the quality of printed images are better than the dimâge also.

Great camera.I can take good quality picture's for the first time in my life as the camera does everything for you. It's got face recognition. It also sorts out the red eye leaving you with outstanding photograph's. I am a complete novice but can easily tell that this is a superb camera. The only thing I can say as a down side is that there are lots of settings which are going to take a while to understand. That may just be a down side of me being a novice photographer. It is also quite bulky but you do get a 3inch lcd screen which flips out. All in all this is a great camera and good value for money.

I managed to get hold of this camera for a great price. I'm very impressed this is a great camera. It takes really nice pictures and is packed with really great features. You can let the camera do all of the work (focus etc) or do it yourself when you become more confident. On the auto setting it is very difficult to take a bad picture!, just point and shoot.

If your looking to upgrade your point and shoot camera or want a camera that you can experiment with then you wont go far wrong!.

  Canon S5 IS digital Camera
Review created: 02/06/08

This camera gives me all the flexibility I need and some. I have a Nikon 35mm and a small canon digital bought several years ago. I prefer the feel of a larger camera, but did not wish to have another bulky SLR. This camera fits the bill perfectly and produces photos of excellent quality. It is still early days, but so far I am delighted with my purchase.

  Canon Digital SLR
Review created: 25/05/08

A quality SLR digital camera, able to be sused by the non-artistic or non technical person in auto mode, and varied for the tchnical. The auto image stabiliser works extremely will to provide sharp images and the Zoom capability really needs this if you are not using a tripod.

Mid DSLR camera with loads of features
Review created: 04/05/08

It's a great camera. Bought it few weeks ago and I'm still learning all the features in it. There is loads - shooting modes, ISO settings,W/B, colors and so on. Most of them can be easily set manually. I bought telephoto and wide angle lenses for it, which makes it even greater camera. There is only a small difference between this camera and real SLR cameras. It does it all, specially for this price (got it for £175).
What I like the most about Canon S5 IS is vari-angle LCD screen. Great for protecting the screen when you're not using it or it's a nice added feature when you're taking macro pictures or when you're in a crowd and want to take some pics in front of you. Just take camera up,turn the screen down and off you go!
I really recommend this camera for everyone, especially for those who want to get into professional photo taking for a half the price of SLR cameras.

  Great Camera
Review created: 07/04/08

This is an absolutely fantastic camera, being a compromise between a compact and SLR. The picture quality is fantastic and it has a range of features, which once you have got the hang of are easy to use and give great results. I like the fact that you can get extra lenses and althoug not a proper SLR, for an amatuer learning the photographic ropes, it teaches whilst giving great results.

Canon Powershot S3 verses the new S5
Review created: 05/04/08

My previous camera was the S3 which received rave reviews when it first appeared back in 2006. I bought the S3 originally partly because I was attracted by the image stabilisation facility it offered. I know my around the Canon menu format etc for their Powershot "S" type cameras and also the S3 produced some excellent pictures, so I did'n want to change to the S5 just for the sake of being up to date.

As well as offering most of the S3 requirements the S5 model has alarger LCD plus a hot shoe for a separate flash gun.

Having read the latest reviews on the S5 I got the impression that the niggling differences shown up by some reviews were not enough to deter me from making the change.

True the wide angle end is still only equivalent to 35mm but I figure that as it wil be a camera that would suit me as the type of camera that is slightly better than the average compact and not wanting the bother of lugging around a SLR body plus all the the attendant leses plus the considerable weight and expence, it would be worth investing in the accessories available for the S5.

A couple of Canon extension tubes would enable me to fit a Canons wide angle (x075)lens and a telephoto (x1.5)lens (I find the wide angle lens in particular gives me all the spread of photo that I require for a wideangle shot). A note of caution here I have gone for the Canon made lenses because although there are cheaper lenses to be found I did not want to compromise on the quality of image which I understand could happen with cheaper non Canon makes.

An extension tube fitted to each lens is a quick and convienient way of interchanging lenses to suit all my shot reqirements.

So having made the switch I have found that so far the limited number of photo's I have taken are every bit as good as the S3. The slightly different control button layout on the S5 I find easier to use and I appreciate the larger LCD which I find much better to read.

I would recommend this little camera to anyone who is serious about their photography but at the same time wants the convienience of a hassle free setup in their camera bag. If you take the time to work out the various menu and fuction formats you'll soon be able to set it up for most of your image requirements and if you can't be bothered with all that you will still get very good images if you just set it on the Auto mode.

By the way I am not connected to Canon in any I just think it is worth sharing my overall impressions of the S5 which I find to be better than the average
compact.

Review created: 01/04/08

Simply the best quality/price on the market! Very professional, lots of functions, easy to use (requires a few minutes of training), the quality and the size of the LCD is fabulous.

Two negative points: the image quality in the viewer (but I doubt you'll use it) and the lens cap (it pops off alone).

For the price: fantastic!
