  Superb bit of kit!!

My last day to day camera was the Canon Powershot A80 and I resisted the urge to upgrade mainly due to the superb image quality. However when Canon released the A720is my resolve cracked and I bought one on Ebay. I've had it a few months now and I'm still amazed how Canon managed to pack so much technology into this little gem for the price.

Like its predecessors the A720is is easy enough to use in auto mode for a complete novice but has all those semi automatic and manual settings that the more advanced photographer demands.

It's main features over previous models are the addition of Digic 3 processing, (found on Canons high end SLR cameras) a new 6 x optical zoom, (same as the G9 model) face detection, high ISO settings and lens shift image stabalisation. All this adds up to an extremely versatile camera that can deliver outstanding images in virtually any shooting conditions.

The optics are superb as you would expect from Canon and well matched to the 8 MP sensor. Image stabalisation becomes necessary as zoom lenses get bigger and it works great on this camera. Blur free hand held images at high zoom are now possible.

My favourite feature is the combination of image stabalisation with higher ISO settings. This makes flash free indoor and night time shots a breeze. Extremely useful when your subject or background could pick up reflection from the flash. The new digic 3 processor does a good job of reducing image noise at higher ISO settings.

The camera takes SD and SDHC media cards which are cheap to buy and best of all runs on just 2 AA batteries. It sips power and expect up to 400 images with decent rechargeables. There is a range of accessories available including wide angle and telephoto conversion lenses which are widely available on Ebay.

Another great feature is the packaged imaging software. It really is easy to use. I've found the auto enhance function to perform consistently well. It shouldn't baffle even the most computer shy person.

All in all I've found this camera superb. It's certainly the best compact I've had and I've had a few! I've just bought another one of these on Ebay for a friend. It was a refurb with 2 gig card and case for £110 inc postage. Thats what I call value for money! If you want a great all rounder that produces brilliant images at a super price then go for it. If you want to see some sample images type "steves digicams" into your browser and go to the camera review section. You will find an in depth review of the camera with full size sample images that you can download.

  Why I choose this model.

I looked long and hard before I decided on this model, I read many reviews, but in the long run this digi camera came out on top. It is a delight to use, it has got a lot of functions on it asociated with more exspensive cameras. I paid £150 for it, that included P+P, I am not a professional, but photography is my hobby. On auto the camera will sort everything out for it self, I can photograph about 150 pictures before the batteries need changing. On the 16 mb card supplied with the camera you can only take about 7 HD photos, so I have bought a 4 gb card which gives me nearly 2000 photos on HD. I found on high iso there was a lot of noise but with photoshop/bridge you can sort out that problem. I am very happy with my choice, and being pocket sized and not too heavy I can keep it with me at all times, it feels right in your hand and I have taken some shots with just one hand, point and shoot. All in all this camera is worth evey penny, not a lot of money for the quality and the photos it produces. 8 mp, loads of functions, loads of fun. As you can see i am over the moon with it, by far the best camera I have ever owned...

a leap into propper photography on the cheap!

after many years using decent point and shoot digi cams and unable to find the many hundreds req for a digi slr i came across the canon a720is. still fairly small to carry about and the chance (after some reading up) to dabble in shutter speeds/appeture settings etc to have a chance of overcoming those disapointing results when a point and shoot shows its weaknesses ( dark, dim, funny lighting conditions). the a720 still has all the auto settings if a quick well lit "normal" shot is there and a selection of the usual part, landscape, portrait, sport etc setting all of which produce point and shoot quality shots. but set the dial to "p" set the light balance (both 2 sec jobs) and you move into a new league.
picture quality, as per online reviews ,is outstanding, far far better than my old fuji f470. crisper acurate photos, which appear only to be bettered by digi slr.mus
one item to note is you MUST MUST get a set of high MAH rechargeable batteries, even decent normal ones only last 40-50 shots sometimes, whilST 2500MAH GP RECHAREABLES do 300-400 shots (possibly a lot more but i swop em over at that stage just in case!) also a SANDISK EXTREME III 2GB SD MEMORY CARD really speeds things up (£8-9 from play.com amongst others including ebay of course!)
So a mix of long optical zoom, manual settings, cheap to buy and cracking quality pics mean a winner all round and recommended

  A GREAT COMPACT!
Review created: 02/02/08

This is a great compact camera!
It really is hard to find fault with it. There are so many useful functions and settings, just about everything is covered.
The zoom is fairly quick, auto-focus is fast & accurate and the image's are crisp & clear. White ballance is controlled very well by the picture settings and the build quality is as you would expect from Canon.
I love this camera,it can do so much more than you would expect from a compact.
I use an EOS 40D Canon D-SLR,and the quality of this powershot and the images it takes are impressive, even compared to the D-SLR!
If i had to find a fault it would be the lack of ability to take RAW files, otherwise i can't speak highly enough about it.
If you want a compact that is easy to use but with enough potential to really test your photographic imagination this is the one for you!

Great camera - better than my Nikon Coolpix!
Review created: 16/01/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have got rid of my Nikon Coolpix in favour of this little beauty. It has 8 megapixels, 6x optical zoom,4x digital zoom,Optical Image Stabilizer, 35 - 210mm lens,2.5" viewfinder,DIGIC III processor with Face Detection AF/AE,17 shooting modes including VGA movies (30 fps) with sound
Takes excellent pics in daylight/evenings.
Manual controls available for Shutter Speed, Aperture, Manual Focus Controls.
Panorama photo option.
Manual Focus is quite helpful when close objects not auto focused by camera.
Image Stabilization is great especially if you are prone to shaky hands like I am
It is a little bulky at about 700 grams without batteries.
I am happy to use this camera for a long time to come & I feel it will do everything I want it to do & more.

Canon PowerShot A720 IS Digital Camera
Review created: 23/11/09

This camera ticks all the boxes for my personal preferences. The resolution is ample for my use. Photos can be displayed and printed larger than A3 without degredation. It has a viewfinder, an essential that does not feature on many a modern camera. It is powered by readily available AA batteries and if you use Energizer lithium they seem to last forever, although they are rather expensive. It takes magic video in AVI, the length of which is only restricted by the remaining memory. The six times optical zoom is a good compromise for a hand held camera. By modern standards it may be considered a little bulky but the display is large enough to review your shots and it can just be considered pocketable.
All in all a cracker, which may explain why they seem to demand higher than expected used prices.

  Canon PowerShot A720 IS Camera
Review created: 01/03/09
by:

Ive had this camera for 2 months now. Not used all setting modes but found the Indoor setting gave execptionally good pictures, Sepia and B&W very good.
A great zoom to cover most photographers needs, came with a basic Getting Starter Guide, but no manual, this manual can be downloaded and read on your computer or printed off what ever page might help you.
One small fault found while using flash, the time it took to read the shots to the memory card, and no raw shooting mode. I would recommend purchasing a 1gb or 2gb memory card and rechargable batteries.
All in all this is a very good camera giving good quality pictures, and loads of modes and functions to play around with.

Review created: 06/06/08

I decided to buy this camera after researching on the net to find out what was the best camera for my needs in my price range. It had many good reviews.
I bought it on ebay from the seller I did because it was a good price compared to others on ebay and it came with lots of extras including a large memory card which otherwise I would have had to fork out a lot of extra money and time getting.
I am extremely pleased with it and it's seriously the best thing I have bought in a long time!

Camera met all high expectations from previous Fuji digital camera with similar specs BUT am surprised that such a smaller camera unit STILL consumes so much energy!! Does anyone else think that having to change batteries 2+ times a DAY is too much for a glorified "holiday/family camers (I mean if I was at a F1 or a sports event & was using it constantly BUT just having to change so many times whilst out on a family day out???????????? Thoughts please...............

Quick Easy - just point and shoot
Review created: 20/05/08

I have been recommended this camera by several friends after i had complained to them that i could never take a decent photo of my children or dog - i forever had shots of grass!!!

This camera is brilliant - it has load of different settings for every occassion - even one "Kids and Pets" which does exactly what it says

The camera is small enough to fit in your pocket but has enough memory to record some quality videos

Not too small so easier to use than the new tiny cameras available. Bought predominantly for the excellent macro feature. Many cameras have this but this one is particularly good. Easy to use, large screen. Would definitely recommend.

Canon A720IS - great all rounder, would reccommend
Review created: 12/05/08
by:

I bought this after a fair amount of research. My main reasons for purchase were that I wanted a an optical viewfinder, so many cameras (with the exception of SLR)do not have them anymore. I love the image stabilisation and the many automatic options (portrait, landscape, kids, evening etc..) are very useful.. I have not had a bad picture with this. The shutter speed is good compared with my old Olympus( but then is was 6 years old). Good for family snapshots and the more serious photographer with the available manual settings. Absoluetly no regrets with this purchase. I reccommended to a friend and they bought one straight away, and are very pleased too.

Lovely camera, easy to use (idiot proof)
Review created: 04/05/08
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did my research and decided to buy this camera, I was a bit worried it might be too big and bulky but it isn't and the bit on the side gives you something to grip.
It is easy to use - I am a real dolt when it comes to cameras but I realised I needed one and this one can be both a point and shoot or you can use all the 'bells and whistles'.
The only disadvantage for me is that you have to press the shutter half way down before you take a photo to allow it to focus and this was not mentioned in ANY review I read and I read lots - including professional ones.
Maybe all cameras are like that.

Anyhow it takes fab photos and everything is so easy and at hand to operate. The 4 times optical zoom is great and the optical viewfinder is a little gem - I can't get used to using the screen to take pics and sometimes the sun makes it difficult to see any screen on any camera so a viewfinder is magic to have.

The playback lever is just simple and quick so you can review immediately.
Lovely little camera. Happy to recommend.
