Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i Digital Camera with 18-55mm lens

What a great camera. I bought the Kiss x3 (Japanese version of 500D). The reason I chose this over a European version is that it saved me a few £. However, I made sure that I bought this from a UK seller, so as to avoid being hit with a no doubt hefty Customs Charge.

I was most interested in this camera for its HD video recording. The ultimate camera for this would be the 5D Mark II, however, this is way out of my price range - at around twice the price of the 500D!

So far I have tested the camera in 720p mode (as this is reported to reduce the rolling shutter, and also allows for a standard frame rate - 1080p mode only shoots 20fps), and the results have been stunning! I took it out with a couple of friends to a fun fair, at night - and I was blown away by the quality and shallow depth of field achieved. The colours were gorgeous, the responsiveness was so much better in low light than I would ever expect from a HD camcorder (FX1, Z1, etc). I was very impressed. Also, I didn't notice any rolling shutter problems. The image seemed nice and stable.

I tested this with the standard 18-55mm kit lens, and the results were great. I can't wait to get an FD to EOS adapter and try out some of my old manual lenses (in particular an 50mm f1.4).

Also, and this kind of goes without saying - the stills photographs are gorgeous too. However I was mainly interested in this camera for the HD video.

The drawbacks -- really, you're limited to 720p - because of the odd framerate canon have chosen for 1080p. A shame, but nothing worth moaning about. No audio inputs (this camera does record audio, but with an on board mic - so quality isn't fantastic) so if used for a short film, and external DAT/sound recorder + Clapper Board would be needed.

The niggles -- When in video mode, auto controls are invoked. The shutter speed and ISO can be locked very easily. The aperture however requires a little unlock+twist of the lens to lock - but once they're set, you can't change them on the fly, without dipping back into auto and having the camera chose for you. Not the best solution - but this is an entry level camera, and I don't see this being too much of a problem for me. Especially with manual aperture lenses.

Also, as a little note - In the short time I've had it, I briefly tested if the Video Out cable works while the camera is in movie mode. And yes, it does seem to - which might be useful to know, for those who wish to use an externally mounted monitor for shooting.

I have been looking to get myself a DSLR for the past few month and with the price of this package I ahd to go for the EOS 500d, the price is comparible with the lower spec older camera in the high street plus you get the full package of lenses, tripod, bags etc. Excellent package.

Simply a must-have for SLR digital camera photo enthusiasts.
The LiveView function where you use the large 3" display as a view finder is very useful when you can't use the TTL view finder.
This camera can even be used to record video with audio (mono) in 1920x1080 (HD), 1280x720 or 640x480 resolutions.
To make the camera as fast as possible, e.g. for Continous Shooting, you need the fastest memory cards available, that is SD HC Class 6 or faster.

I am no expert (as the hours I have spent reading the manual to get the best out of this will prove) but this camera is the business as far as I can tell.

Picture quality is amazing. Relatively light for a camera that size. Battery life superb. If you have a young family and want to capture those special moments then get this one!

I have stuck to Canon cameras and grown to rely on them and I've not been let down. I have a number of lenses and flashguns and such, so I am, I suppose, somewhat tied into the Canon thing. I had a 400D for a few years and used it everywhere I went. It wasn't good in low light so I bought a more powerful flashgun which did improve my control over the results. The 500D is an improvement with 50% better resolution, and it has an exposure in low light that automatically provides a higher ISO factor. I've had some surprisingly good results in challenging light conditions. What I wish it had though, is built-in memory capacity. The times I've taken it out and forgot I'd left the memory card attached to my computer. Frustrating.

I've been a Canon user for the last four digital cameras.
Upgrading from the 350D was a good move. It hadles my limited abilities well.
I've not used the HD video yet, though it's a comfort to know it's there when I want it.

I have shot on 35mm film for years and this camera offers the full flexibity of digital and a nearly the resolution of film. The controls and menus are extremely well thought out and anybody moving form film to digital will find the process painless. I like long exposure night shots and this camera delivers that function with a Bulb setting for the exposure and a denoise function. The LCD screen is excellent and gives a good large preview of what you've taken. The camera is remarkably light weight and the bonus of being able to film in full HD id an excellent finishing touch. Battery life is excellent and my only critisism which is probably because I haven't worked out how to tunr it off is the flash sometimes pops up when I don't want it to.

This is a great product. The package included wide angle and telephoto lens' and everything required to start taking really excellent pictures. The battery life is excellent and there is a spare anyway. You really can go out for the day and shoot as many pics as you want. If you really know about photography all the options are there to play with but if you just want to be able to point and shoot that produces fine images also.

It´s a fantastic camera for a beginner like me. And it´s a fantastic camera for the trained photographer. The camera is producing excellent pictures, however, the 18-55 mm kit lense is not the best of its kind. Therefor I also bought the 55-250 mm lense. I bought this because of the built in image stabilizer. And now I feel like a worldclass photographer.
