if like me you have a compact camera, about 6mp or less, and wants a logical upgrade into the world of SLR, you cannot go wrong at all with this.

To me, its stunning, the clarity, the colours and creativity that you have with this camera for the price is second to none.

You can get a pack or macro lenses on ebay for less than 25 pounds, a worthwhile investment if you want to take closeups etc.

The camera itself is very well built and feels sturdy to hold.

I have used it almost daily since i have had the camera because it is such a pleasure to use, it gives you a new angle on every day items and views. It really sparks your passion again for photography.

In short, if you are looking to upgrade your old compact to an entrance into the world of the SLR, you cannot go wrong with the 400D / rebel xti!

great camera, works well take`s great photos onces you get to grips with it.
needed a new camera for my work, and this canon 400d has been just the job,
with its 10.1 magepixels. It has a 2.5 inches screen were you can see the pictures you have taken. Battery life is good, just keeps on going.
bought a few more things to go with it,like new lens ,case, and lots more so in all a great little camera. A great all rounder that any one can get to grips with.Thought I would update, now that I have had the camera for a time now.
It has been great to use and still not board of it, Take’s great pictures. Still getting used to all the settings and it’s a must to try them all out so you get to know what setting is best for that all important picture .
I just sat in a field and tried them all out. Took loads of pictures, come home and down loaded them. Thankfully I wrote down what setting for each picture.
I’m sure there is an easier way like reading the book you get, but I just like to take time and just get out there its not like you have to pay to see your mistakes, you just wipe it all and try again. And then it should sink in and come automatic in time.
Try and get a battery for back just in case, if like me I take so many and can be out all day, I tend not to keep looking at them and running through them all as this will drain the life out of the battery. This so far has not happened to me. I just make sure its full life before I go. But I do now have back up just in case. Good to have a bigger memory card so you can hold more pictures or just use it for back up. If you need good quality pictures remember it takes up more room on the card so you will need a spare. It is great to have a choice of the quality of picture you want to take.
I now have the remote control for when taking wildlife when you need to hide took some getting used to but now have got the hang of it, worth getting.
Remember if you want to save the battery life turn the screen off so you don’t view the picture as you take it. You can have the picture only come up just after you take it so you see it for second. Well I hope this helps. I know that I love this camera its just a good all rounder and so far has not let me down. 2008 Feb Up Date its been some time now working with this camera and yes this little number has come up tops, got to grips with all the settings and it still puts a smile on my face. Plus money in the bank what more can i ask. I still can not find one thing about this camera i dislike. I have few more new lens i bought to play with. 100% Happy still.

Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera with 18-55mm
Review created: 02/10/08

When I first bought this item I was thinking mainly about the price this was a great value item as you didn't just get the camera you also received extra items to get you up in running and taking digital pictures. It came with a 18mm - 55mm with macro which is ideal for taking close shots it also came with a 4GB compact flash card and card reader which allowed me to either download images to the pc direct from the camera using its usb cable or taking the memory card out of the camera and inserting it into the card reader, it came with software which helps you to improve the images you have taken, the software can help get rid of those annoying dust marks on images which i haven't used yet as all my images have been fine so far. The best thing about this camera is the easy and simplistic way in taking pictures for an SLR camera this is the ideal choice for a beginner

  Excellent Quality product
Review created: 20/09/08

I am neither Pro nor Semi Pro.Still my a good photographer, who love nature and wildlife.Previously I had Manual Yashika...... Then I went For Kodak compact digital 10mp,that was good enough for me but I was not impressed.

I thought to go for SLR camera,my first option was Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi .
from the first day as i recieved it I was exploring it ,and taking snaps, got good quality results.More pixels, a bigger LCD, and dust reduction are welcome, but faster AF is the true benefit to the Rebel XTi.

Ive been so happy with this item since it arrived.
I started shooting random pictures of flowers and whatnot which was in my reach. and gues what.. even the clear lack of expirience that I have, I can say that it does its job marvelously.

sample pictures I took:

http://www.pbase.com/casmon/image/102786431http://www.pbase.com/casmon/image/102785959

Do i need to say more?
well.. only that you got to make clear to yourself what kind of photos you will be taking, and see if you will need another lens.
read about this at: http://www.eosrebels.com/ (a very nice site I found about these cams. and im not assosiated with it)

Worthy way into the DSLR Market.

The Canon 400D model is a couple of years old now, has recently been updated by the 450D. Do not let that sway you away from the 400D.

A superb, well made and robust piece of kit.

Robust being a very good thing, I have dropped my camera already since owning it.

I bought this model as an upgrade for my "Bridge Type Camera"

What a difference, faster, smoother and almost as easy to use.

An advantage to the DSLR, interchangable lenses.

With a Canon, there are a couple of other lens manufacturers that can be used.

A must for anyone - Professional or not
Review created: 28/08/08

Having this camera compared to a normal digital camera, is fun, but at hte same time timeless and priceless. It is easy to use with one of the best describing user friendly manuals. I'm not a frofessional photographer, but can almost see myself becoming one after using the Canon 400D for a while. The opportunities is endless with all the accessories that comes with it and a definite must for everyone. The functions is clearly stated and a big LCD screen that makes it even more exciting to have a quick look at your good work. Easy downloading of pictures to your computer and the best quality of pictures as it has more that 10 Mega pixels. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone professional or to someone for personal use.

Canon digital SLR cameras have an excellent reputation. They are loved by amateurs and professionals alike and this particular camera is viewed as a very good starting point for new users, but being versatile enough that you do not need to replace it for a more expensive version when you have started to use it.
We have taken some very good pictures with the camera so far and I think that had I waited a little longer and had used all of it's features I would rate it as excellent.
I love black and white photos and this camera has a monochrome setting so I love that bit.
There is nothing that I dont like so far and it is sooo easy to use.
An excellent buy from e-bay for me!

The first thing I need to mention is that the images are so sharp compared to a digital compact its unbelievable. Some photos just look edited because they are so clear when compared to a standard camera.

You can also take photos really quickly from having your camera turned off (If you have your lens attached with the cap off) so that you can catch those things that you always miss because your camera is slow and tempramental.

Also, you have a greater ability to manipulate the settings to create different effects with your photos, as well as taking photos in RAW mode so that they can be completely edited on a personal computer.

This camera is getting cheaper because of the 1000d and the 450d, and the main difference I can really see is the lack of a standard lens with image stabalisation. This can be added later if you are planning to invest further in your equipment, but i think images are best taken with a tripod without an IS lens. The 10 megapixels is plenty and unless you have a decent PC with a big hard drive as well as a big flash memory card I would prefer these size files.

Some things to be aware of if you're getting a DSLR are the lack of video mode, inability to zoom on the lcd screen and the cost of new lenses. You can get great photos on the standard lens though.

There is also a small sound that you can hear when moving the eos 400d and it is the pop up flash mounts which are pretty poor quality.

Make sure you budget in a CF card with a couple of GB's of memory and perhaps a spare battery. This is a good camera to start out with if you're getting a DSLR and being a CANON makes it extremely upgradeable in terms of lenses as your interest progresses and you're willing to make a bigger financial commitment.

OH an ultra compact users may have a little trouble getting used to the size of the thing, it's definately not going to fit into your pocket, so having an ultra compact/really good mobile phone camera and one of these is a perfect combination if you never want to miss a shot.

This is my first digital SLR (upgrading from a small compact digital camera) and I have to say I am totally blown away by it. I wish I had bought one years ago!

It is easy to use, easy to hold (I have quite big hands) and quite light wieght. It starts up instantly, time between shots is very quick especially on rapid shot mode at 3 frames per second. I have had this camera for about 5 weeks and I have taken about 400 photos and the battery is still on it's first charge and has plenty of life left in it!

When I was researching this camera I read several reviews thatsaid the lens that came with the camera isn't very good. This worried me alittle but I went for the camera with the view that I could always get another lens. Well I was worried about nothing. The camera takes great pictures, they are really sharp. I took some photos of a neighbours cat and the close up shots show every single hair on the cats face. Landscape shots are bright, vibrant and crisp. Portrait shots also work well.

I'm now experimenting with using my own shutter speed settings, or aperture settings etc. Great fun.

The software bundle that comes with the camera is also excellent. It's a piece of cake to domnload the photos to your PC then you can use the image editing software to trim, alter brightness, contrast, remove red eye etc. It does everything I want and more.

All in all I'm very happy with this camera and I would recommend it to anyone.

Alistair

  Worth it!

Great!!! So far, I'm very glad to have this camera. This is my first digital SLR and I found it very easy for beginners or amateur photographer alike. Basically, I tried the camera for summer holiday photography ever since. It hasn't failed on me yet, and the resolution is amazing. The 2.5" LCD is very convenient, yet it for some reason always looks better on camera than on monitor. So far, the camera worked flawlessly and the dust removal system performed perfectly.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this camera to anyone, especially to amateur, needing a lightweight camera with a good quality lens (resolution, colour saturation and smooth operation).

I have only had this camera for 4 days so still getting used to all the functions and settings, but I must admit it has been quite easy to get to grips with. All the menus are easy to find and easy to operate and understand.

The quality of the photos is really good, and easy to upload to your pc.

Very happy with the camera so far, recomend it to anyone as a real good starter camera, at a reasonable price.

  Canon EOS400D & Battery Grip
Review created: 17/08/08
by:

Excellent piece of kit, easy for beginners or experts alike. Good handbook and fast starter leaflet to get you going right away. Well worth the money.
The lens in the kit is o.k. for starting but will need upgrading if you want better quality pictures, but if you are just a family holiday snapper it will do just fine.
The battery grip is a worthwhile addition giving up to 600 shots on a full charge. It also helps with camera balance when using a larger lens, which does tend to make the camera front end heavy without the battery grip. Another advantage is if you already own a Canon EOS 35ml film camera, the lenses are interchangeable, saving the extra expenditure on more lenses.
One complaint is the lack of CF card in the camera kit. For this sort of money, you would think the inclusion of even a 1GB card would be standard. As it is, you buy the kit and then have to buy a CF card before you can start using it, which appears to be pennypinching.
All that aside it is a really good camera kit and well worth the investment.
