Canon EOS 30D - Excellent budget semi pro DSLR

I have owned my Canon EOS 30D for a year and previously had a Canon EOS 350D. My friend has a Nikon D200 and previously owned a Nikon D70. Comparing the Canons and the Nikon has given me a pretty good view on the strengths and weaknesses of the two brands and the specific cameras. More recently I have upgraded to a Canon EOS 40D.

The reasons replacing the 350 with the 30 were...

Increased body size feels better in the hand than the 350 and reduces camera shake particularly when using a long lens.

Increased frame rate of 5fps (fastest camera out of all of these) is great for action shots such as sports of photos of the kids at play.

Large 2.5 inch rear screen with clear RGB histogram function enables me to check my settings

Thumbwheel operation on the back of the camera is easier to use than the buttons on the 350/400 and fast response times of this and all other functions in the camera make it very easy and quick to use.

Ability to customise the functions within the camera is useful to me though I gather a lot of people dont really care.

Scene modes such as portrait, landscae and user defined are great once you learn how to use them. Nikons are generally slightly over saturated in default settings whereas Canon is less so but the scene modes allow you to alter this to your own taste. You might not want this is you use photoshot all the time but if you want the photos straight out of the camera then they are great. Tip: increase saturation but not sharpness.

Canon reputation and support prevented me from swapping to Nikon. I only had one lens when I upgraded so brand loyalty was never an issue. I actually like the Nikon cameras but they do lack the quality feel of the Canons and have less lenses available. That said they seem to offer more custom functions and accessories are generally slightly cheaper.

My freind paid a lot more for his D200 than my 30D and yet bits keep falling off it and it occaisionally locks up and he has to turn it off/on to get it working again.. Generally though I think it is probably a better camera with more features and higher resolution. The histogram function is better on the Nikon and the viewfinder is brighter. On the downside it has a CCD sensor rather than a SMOS sensor so the battery life is not so good and I gather the image quality is not as good on CCD but I think they're identical. The CMOS on the Canon does go much higher i nthe ISO range without noise though and this is a definite advantage over the Nikons but only a problem in poor light.

The 30D also has spot meterign which is really good if the subject is heavily backlit. The 350 and 400 do not have this.

The high ISO of H3200 is great for shooting fast subjects in dark places. Check out my jumping dog in the woods shot. This would have been impossible on a Nikon.

Mostly I bought this camera because I liked the way it feels and operates rather than anything to do with the image quality. The image quality is taken as read on a Canon and, to be fair, most digital cameras are pretty good these days. The range of lenses is not a consideration to me either as I can only afford two of them

This brings the deciding factor down to the price / feature comparison and this is where the 30D won hand over fist for me. When buying a camera you should list all the features that YOU want to use rather than the features of the individual cameras and put them in order of importance to you and buy the best you can afford.

THIS CAMERA IS THE BEST SLR DIGITAL CAMERA THIS SORT OF MONEY WILL BUY.READ ALL THE REVIEWS IN THE PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINES.WERE DO I START,LIGHT WEIGHT IT HAS A BIGGER BODY THAN THE 350D/400D,WITCH IS MADE OF ALLOY ,I AM 6.2" AND HAVE BIG HANDS THIS DOES HELP,IT FEELS GREAT AND HAS A PRO FEEL .8.2 MEGAPIXEL,5FPS,ISO SPEED 100-3200 ,2.5" DISPLAY .BIULT IN FLASH WHICH THE 5D DOES NOT .BASIC IDIOT PROOF IMAGE ZONE (POINT AND SHOOT)I HAVE ACHIEVED SOME REALLY GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THIS BASIC ZONE,LIKE FAST MOTOR SPORTS/HORSE JUMPING THE 5FPS COMES IN HANDY HEAR .I HAVE HAD PORTRAIT AND NIGHT SHOTS COME OUT GREAT AS WELL ,OR IF YOU ARE MORE ADVANCED THE CREATIVE ZONE IS THERE TWO ,THE 5D ONLY HAS THIS ZONE .WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS YOU DONT NEED TO BE A EXPERT (DAVID BAILY)TO WORK ONE OF THESE CANON EOS 3OD`S. YOU GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLD WITH THE 30D A BIT OF 350/400D AND 5D .I CAN GO ON AND ON ABOUT THIS CAMERA ,THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT ONCE YOU START YOU WANT MORE AND MORE ,BETTER PHOTOGRAPHS.BUT WE ALL CARNT AFORD A EOS-5D OR A EOS-1D MK III AT £2000 TO £4000.
HOPE THIS HELPS CHEERS PETER

  eos 30D 8.2mp digital camera
Review created: 23/03/09

First of all i will tellyou that in the past ive used most of the canon eos range of film and digital cameras over the past few years. two years ago i was using a 10d and i was more than happy with it. i then upgraded to a 20d and things were slightly better. going up from 6.3 mp to 8.2mp isnt really a huge step. to double the resolution of 6.3 mp you would require 25mp, so 8.2mp is only a slight increase based on resolution. i then moved onto a eos 1ds mk1 coupled with L series lenses. its nice having that sort of kit if youre a pro but for most of us enthusiasts its a bit of an extravagance. so, i sold my 1ds and bought a 30d. i was expecting to be disappointed, but once i'd set up the 30d to my style i was more than pleased. especially considering that you could purchase four 30D's for the price of a 1ds. the main reason i went for the 30d was due to its 2.5 inch screen, same as on the 5d but the 5d goes for about £900. my 30d cost me £300 for a mint item, and i must say that for my photography requirements it is more than sufficient. its not a pro body but it does have a magnesium chassis so its pretty tough.i coupled it with a BG-E2 battery grip just to give a bit of bulk when using large lenses. ive no regrets at all about selling my 1ds. the key to good pics is in my opinion down to the quality of the lenses attached. theres no need to buy higher res cameras unless ur a pro and you need the robustness. instead, invest in some decent glass like the 24-105mm IS USM for about £600 for the lens. Im happy anyway and have no complaints about the 30D

Great semi-pro DSLR camera, much better comfortable in hand, way better built quality than my previous 400D, top image quality, only down side is the LCD screen isn't as sharp as 400D's.But the used 30Ds are still the best camera you can buy for the money.

  Excellent Camera!

After using Nikon for 3 years along with a 17-55mm 2.8G pro lens, i decided to have a try on the Canon 30D along with the same rated lens, but unfortunately the lens isnt rated as "pro" or L as canon put it, but has the advantage of IS.

The Canon 30D is, in my eyes, far better than any Nikon i used, the images look sharper, the colour looks so much cleaner. It is taking me a bit of getting used to, but that's natural after using nikon for so long.

The only downside upto now is the LCD, in bright conditions its dim and makes your images look under exposed, but apart from that, i cannot yet fault it.

There is no doubt that the 30D is a top spec camera and certainly attractive to enthusiasts and semi pros. It is lightening fast and very response, build quality is good. I was however slightly dissapointed with the images as they did not have the vivid clarity that i am seeking in a camera. Certainly, images are superbly represented and contain good detail (using a 17-85mm IS lens) but just a little bit bland from my perspective. By the way once you stck a quality lens on the camera such as the 17-85mm IS lens, the combined weight will surprise you - particularly if you are planning to lug it around all day. For Canon lovers this is a great camera, for me though i am not wedded to the brand and i have now sold the camera on.

Only had the blooming thing 2 hours and i am in love with it. It handles so well and its just amazing. Fast shutter although the only draw back is the rear LCD wont let you change your settings you have to use the top.

Overall well worth the 250 i paid and got 2 batteries and a remote release!

SUPERB CAMERA FOR THE MONEY. CANON'S CMOS SENSOR PRODUCES EXCEPTIONAL IMAGES AND PERFORMANCE ACROSS ISO RANGE. A BIG STEP UP FROM THE EXCELLENT 20D WITH LARGER SCREEN AND STILL THAT DURABLE BODY AND SIMPLICITY OF USE.

Excellent Canon Pro DSLR build quality.
Features & layout same as other similar models in the stable which make using the 30D a delight.
Excellent LCD on rear of camera to provide better instant feedback on photos taken as on 20D this was a bit too small for my liking.
